Passenger flown out after slide-off crash

SPEARSVILLE — A 36-year-old Brown County man had to be taken to a hospital by a medical helicopter after the vehicle he was riding in slid off Spearsville Road Monday and overturned, trapping him inside.

The accident occurred at about 3:50 p.m. Jan. 21 near the Brown-Johnson county line. Heather Hall, 36, of Greenwood, told police her vehicle slid off the road before going up an embankment and overturning on its left side, an accident report by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Nicholson Briles states.

Hall’s passenger, Justin Blackadar, told police and emergency personnel he believed his leg was broken.

Firefighters from Hamblen Township Volunteer Fire Department cut the top of the vehicle off to remove Blackadar, the report states. Sgt. Bill Southerland, with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department, helped to extract him.

Blackadar was taken to Johnson County by ambulance to be flown to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

The police report described the road condition as snow/slush, and that was a contributing factor, Briles wrote.
