Weekly yoga classes offered

Various yoga classes are offered at Simply Fitness, 47 E. Main St.:

  • 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Feb. 26 — Explore basic yoga movement and postures utilizing props such as a yoga block and bolster pillow. Sessions will help participants find poses to incorporate into home practice. Cost: $15.
  • 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdays through Jan. 31 — Erica Weddle of Simply Fitness and Leah Craig of Roots of Healing Acupuncture will explore general yoga and acupuncture. Craig will identify points of the body through needle placement. With needles still in, Weddle will guide participants through simple yoga poses. Cost: $21.
  • 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26 — Vinyasa flow yoga class starts with breath work, moving into postures that pair breath and movement, progressing into a fluid pattern. Geared toward any fitness level with modifications as needed. Cost: $13.
  • 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 5 through 28 — Community lunchtime yoga sessions geared to any fitness level cost $5 per session or get a five-session card for $20.
  • Private yoga or personal training sessions with Weddle are for $30 per 45-minute session.

Women, take a free hike this Saturday

STONE HEAD — At 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, a free “Wild Women’s Hike” will begin at Stone Head Conservancy, 4645 Bellsville Pike.

This hike will have a focus on meditation and mindfulness. The 1.5-mile trail has little elevation and is not very rugged, but it will be icy and/or muddy. It’s expected to finish by 11:30 a.m.

The sponsor of the hike, DNK Presents, is a team that organizes and guides “adventure retreats” for groups and businesses. According to co-founders of the group, Danielle Nolan and Kate Nolan, the focus is to “get more people, especially women, in the great outdoors, experiencing and living life to the fullest.”

Free lunchtime workout classes added at Y

The Brown County YMCA has added some “pop-up” fitness classes during lunch hours.

Kyla Carter will teach a free kickboxing class from 11:30 to 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, and a pilates/yoga fusion class from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m.

“Kickboxing is a heart pounding class for those who aren’t afraid to break a sweat and kick those calories,” the Y explained in a press release. “Pilates/yoga fusion is a lighter pace class designed for those who still want a good workout, but don’t have time to get all sweaty before returning to work.”

Kickboxing also will be taught on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Y. The class is free to Y members and $3 for non-members.

Winter hikes planned at state park

A series of winter hikes is planned at Brown County State Park. All hikes will begin at 11 a.m. and will cover between 2 and 4 miles over rugged or sloppy terrain. Leashed, friendly dogs are welcome. All hikes meet at 11 a.m. on Saturdays at the Nature Center.

  • Feb. 9 — Curious quarry: Carpool to trailhead at Horse Trail A; hike about a mile-and-a-half to Trail 17 for half a mile; total about 4 miles with some sloppy, some rugged areas and time to explore quarry area.
  • Feb. 16 and March 30 — Lake That Never Was: Carpool to trailhead at Horse Trail B, descend on rugged trail and cross several creeks to Hidden Valley and to dam site; about 2 miles total lasting about 90 minutes.
  • March 2 — Boulder in tree: Carpool to Horse Trail A, hike a short distance and continue on rugged off-trail trek for majority of hike; total about 2 miles lasting about 90 minutes.
  • March 9 — Ten O’Clock Line Nature Preserve: Carpool to a fire trail, hike about one mile to Horse Trail B, then around nature preserve; total distance about 2 1/2 miles for about two hours.

Winter dog hike, scavenger hunt set Feb. 2

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 2, the Brown County State Park Nature Center will host the third annual winter dog hike.

Bring your leashed dog and sign up between 9 and 11 a.m. to get a map and score card. Explore the woods and collect codes to earn points. First-, second- and third-place prizes will be awarded to the canine/human duo that collects the most points, turning score cards back to the Nature Center by 3 p.m.

Park rules must be followed, including keeping your dog on a 6-foot leash and cleaning up after your pet. Anyone caught not keeping park rules will be disqualified. Winners will be announced by 4 p.m.

Bicycle ‘death march’ to take place in March

NORMAN — The “death march” — a bicycle race for teams of two to cemeteries in and around the Hoosier National Forest — will begin and end Saturday, March 9, at the Midwest Trail Ride Horseman’s Camp, 1264 Hunters Creek Road.

Teams will be required to reach five checkpoints. Teams can use any route and visit them in any order. Bonus time can be earned by visiting additional checkpoints along the way.

Check-in starts at 7:15 a.m., the race starts at 9:30 a.m. and all riders must finish by 6 p.m. Awards are presented at 4 p.m.

Child care available weekdays at YMCA

The Brown County YMCA offers child care for two hours at a time while parents are in the building.

The service is free to Y members and for $2 per child for non-members. Children ages 6 months to 8 years old are welcome. Child watch hours are from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

Disc golf league plays every Tuesday

The Brown County Disc Golf Alliance plays regularly in Brown County and new members are welcome.

The group plays Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. at Deer Run Park or at the Brown County Country Club, alternating months. In January it’s the club.

Players of all skill levels are welcome, including those who have never played before. Loaner discs are available.

Kyokushin karate training offered

Sensei David Michaelis is offering training in traditional kyokushin karate.

Classes are for students 16 and older twice a week, at 6 p.m. Thursdays and 4 p.m. Sundays.

Michaelis has trained and taught kyokushin karate for more than 35 years. Kyokushin, Japanese for “the society of the ultimate truth,” is a style of stand-up, full-contact karate. It is intended to foster humility, perseverance and nonviolence and to provide a foundation for improving physical and mental discipline.
