Pioneer Women

The Pioneer Women’s Club meets each Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the History Center, 90 E. Gould St. Interested women are welcome.

Woodworkers club

A representative of the Woodpeckers Tool Company will present the program when the Brown County Woodworkers Club meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6 at the Brown County Public Library.

Rotary club

At the Jan. 17 meeting, Rotarian Kathryn Richardson introduced Madison Bickley as Rotary’s December Student of the Month. Bickely was nominated by Cheryl Fox, her mathematics teacher, based on her enthusiasm, dedication, initiative, positive attitude and time management skills. These attributes enabled Bickelt to achieve a single-digit class rank, be president of the National Honor Society and a member of the Cycling Club, History Club and Interact, as well as play on the volleyball team. She plans to study psychology at IUPUI or the University of Louisville and pursue a career in counseling teenagers. Flanking Bickley on the left are her sister, Megan; Fox; and her mother, Jennifer; and on the right are her father, Aaron; and Kathryn Richardson.

The Brown County Rotary Club will meet at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7 at Nashville’s Artists Colony Inn, 105 S. Van Buren St.

Brian Garman and Sarah Cochran will chronicle the journey that Brown County Junior High School embarked upon in the fall of 2014 to become an Impact School through the implementation of a 21st century model for teaching and learning.

Garman has worked for Brown County Schools for 29 years, now as principal at the Junior High School. He holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Indiana University as well as master’s degrees in curriculum and instruction and school administration from Indiana University and Indiana Wesleyan University. His wife teaches fifth-grade math at Brown County Intermediate School. They have two daughters who will be graduating from the University of Southern Indiana and Purdue University this May.

Cochran has worked for Brown County Schools for six years as a language arts teacher and instructional coach at the junior high school. She holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Indiana University with a concentration in English literature and is currently enrolled in graduate school for education administration and supervision with a concentration in curriculum development through Ball State University. Her husband works as an operating engineer for Maxim Crane Works in Indianapolis. They have two sons, one sophomore at Brown County High School and one sophomore at Indiana State University.

Members of the community are invited to attend.

WRAPS

The Writers, Readers and Poets Society meets from 7 to 9 p.m. on first and third Thursdays each month to read and discuss the literary compositions of those present. The next meetings will be Feb. 7 and 21 at the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane. All are welcome.

Widowed group

The Brown County Widowed Group will meet at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Sycamore Valley Community Center on the fairgrounds. The group will the discuss the introduction to the book, “The Elderly.”

Also come prepared to discuss your hopes for the coming year.

League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters of Brown County has a monthly board meeting from 10 a.m. to noon the second Monday of each month. Meetings are conducted in lower-level meeting room A of the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. The next meeting will be Feb. 11. The public is welcome.

Beekeepers club

The 10 o’clock Beeline Beekeepers Club will have its first monthly meeting of the year at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11 in one of the meeting rooms on the lower level of the Brown County Public Library in Nashville. The major topic of discussion will be preparing for spring.

The club welcomes anyone interested in bees or beekeeping. Individuals interested in starting a beehive are particularly encouraged to attend. Experienced beekeepers are available as mentors to anyone thinking about taking up this activity.

Cemetery society

The Brown County Cemetery Preservation Society, a committee of the Peaceful Valley Heritage group, meets at 4:15 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month in the archives room at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. The next meeting will be Feb. 12. The public is welcome.

Preservation group

The Peaceful Valley Heritage Inc. preservation group meets the second Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 12 in the Howard F. Hughes Community Building, 209 N. Van Buren St. All are welcome.

Photography club

The Brown County Photography Club meets from 7 to 9 p.m. the second Tuesday of every month in a lower-level room at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. The next meeting will be Feb. 12. Anyone interested in photography is welcome.

Members of the club currently have photos for sale at the Daily Grind, 114 S. Van Buren St. Photos will be shown on a rotating basis.

Genealogy group

The Brown County Genealogical Society meets at 1 p.m. the second Thursday of each month at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane.

The next meeting is planned for Feb. 14, which will be a round-table discussion on ships and immigrant ancestors. The Scots-Irish topic has been moved to March 14. Meetings are free and all are welcome.

Lions club

The Brown County Lions Club dinner meets for dinner at 6:30 p.m. third Tuesdays of the month at Parkview Church of the Nazarene.

The club has been serving the community since 1943 and members live by the motto, “We Serve.” Local, statewide, national and worldwide programs include: Leader Dogs for the Blind; speech and hearing needs; vision screening, including working with Brown County Schools; cancer and diabetes programs; college scholarships and more.

Herb society 

The Brown County Herb Society has changed its meeting time from 6:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Meetings are still the third Monday of each month in lower-level Room B at the Brown County Public Library. The next meeting will be Feb. 18. The public is welcome.
