New spin classes added to YMCA schedule

For bicyclists who can’t get out due to the weather, a new spin class is being offered Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings at the Brown County YMCA.

Heather Harvey, a spin instructor for four years in Indianapolis, recently moved to the area. Harvey’s classes begin at 6 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and at 9:15 a.m. Saturdays, all at the YMCA.

Register for youth baseball, softball, T-ball

Brown County Parks and Recreation is taking registrations through Friday, Feb. 22 for T-ball, youth softball and youth baseball programs.

T-ball is for boys and girls ages 4 to 6. The fee is $50 per player.

Softball is for girls ages 6 to 12. The division age groups are 6-8, 9-10 and 11-12. The registration fee is $65 per player.

Rookie League baseball is for ages 7 and 8. The fee is $55 per player.

Minor League baseball is for ages 9 and 10. Major League baseball is for ages 11 and 12. The registration fee is $65 per player.

Any players who register by Feb. 15 will get a $10 discount. For siblings registering together, each additional child gets a $10 discount.

Practices will begin after spring break. T-ball and Rookie League games will be played at Deer Run Park in Nashville. Softball, Major League and Minor League games will be played in Nashville, Morgantown, Prince’s Lakes, Trafalgar and Edinburgh.

Team sponsors ($175 to $225) and coaches also are needed.

New session of YMCA classes has begun

The Brown County YMCA has started a new session of classes, including some new choices:

  • Spinning classes are now offered from 6:15 to 7:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Saturdays.
  • Kickboxing classes have been expanded to two nights a week, from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • A barre fitness class is taught from 7:30 to 8:15 p.m. Thursdays and 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. Fridays.
  • A new session of core conditioning has been added from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Fridays.
  • PiYo, a mix of Pilates and yoga, offered from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. Fridays.

No classes will be taught during spring break, March 18-22.

In addition to adult class expansions, the Y also offers Total Tumble Mondays this session. “By offering this class cluster during child watch operating hours and peak fitness hours, families and children can enjoy their own classes with a convenient and affordable option,” says Program Director Heather Ford.

Beginner tumbling and intermediate tumbling circuits take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Mondays, and advanced tumbling is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tumbling classes are for children of all ages; a $10 additional child discount is offered for multi-child families.

Weekly yoga classes offered downtown

Various yoga classes are offered at Simply Fitness, 47 E. Main St.:

  • 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through Feb. 28 — Community lunchtime yoga sessions geared to any fitness level. Cost: $5.
  • 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Feb. 26 — Explore basic yoga movement and postures utilizing props such as a yoga block and bolster pillow. Cost: $15.
  • 6 to 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24 — Erica Weddle of Simply Fitness, Leah Craig of Roots of Healing Acupuncture and Danielle Wolter Nolan of SoulfulTrail will offer an evening of restorative yoga, acupuncture and Thai massage. Cost: $50.
  • Weddle offers 45-minute private yoga or personal training sessions. Cost: $30.

Disc golf league plays every Tuesday

The Brown County Disc Golf Alliance plays regularly in Brown County and new members are welcome.

The group plays Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. at Deer Run Park or at the Brown County Country Club, alternating months. In February it’s the club.

Players of all skill levels are welcome, including those who have never played before. Loaner discs are available.

Winter hikes planned at state park

A series of winter hikes is planned at Brown County State Park. All hikes will begin at 11 a.m. and will cover between 2 and 4 miles over rugged or sloppy terrain. Leashed, friendly dogs are welcome. All hikes meet at 11 a.m. on Saturdays at the Nature Center.

  • March 2 — Boulder in tree: Carpool to Horse Trail A, hike a short distance and continue on rugged off-trail trek for majority of hike; total about 2 miles lasting about 90 minutes.
  • March 9 — Ten O’Clock Line Nature Preserve: Carpool to a fire trail, hike about one mile to Horse Trail B, then around nature preserve; total distance about 2 1/2 miles for about two hours.
  • March 30 — Lake That Never Was: Carpool to trailhead at Horse Trail B, descend on rugged trail and cross several creeks to Hidden Valley and to dam site; about 2 miles total lasting about 90 minutes.

Free mountain bike rides offered first Tuesdays

Trek Women’s Advocate and professional guide Kate Nolan will lead women’s mountain bike rides for riders of all skill levels from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on first Tuesdays in Brown County State Park. The next ride will be March 5. Meet in the parking lot closest to the north gate.

While the rides are free, park entrance fees may apply.

Bicycle ‘death march’ to take place in March

NORMAN — The “death march” — a bicycle race for teams of two to cemeteries in and around the Hoosier National Forest — will begin and end Saturday, March 9, at the Midwest Trail Ride Horseman’s Camp, 1264 Hunters Creek Road.

Teams will be required to reach five checkpoints. Teams can use any route and visit them in any order. Bonus time can be earned by visiting additional checkpoints along the way.

Check-in starts at 7:15 a.m., the race starts at 9:30 a.m. and all riders must finish by 6 p.m. Awards are presented at 4 p.m.

Child care available weekdays at YMCA

The Brown County YMCA offers child care for two hours at a time while parents are in the building.

The service is free to Y members and for $2 per child for non-members. Children ages 6 months to 8 years old are welcome. Child watch hours are from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

Kyokushin karate training offered

Sensei David Michaelis is offering training in traditional kyokushin karate.

Classes are for students 16 and older twice a week, at 6 p.m. Thursdays and 4 p.m. Sundays.

Michaelis has trained and taught kyokushin karate for more than 35 years. Kyokushin, Japanese for “the society of the ultimate truth,” is a style of stand-up, full-contact karate. It is intended to foster humility, perseverance and nonviolence and to provide a foundation for improving physical and mental discipline.
