Annual Taste of Art planned for March 23

The fourth annual Taste of Art with “wine, ‘shine, and beer tastings” will take place Saturday, March 23 at the Seasons Lodge and Conference Center, 560 State Road 46 East.

Guests can sample Brown County wines, beers and distilled liquors along with hor d’oeuvres beginning at 5 p.m. At the same time, a silent auction will take place, ending at 6:45 p.m. At 7 p.m., Dennis Jackson will host a fine art auction of heirloom and contemporary artwork. The auction should end around 9 p.m.

Tickets are $35 in advance or $40 at the door. Samples will be provided by Chateau Thomas Winery, Quaff ON! Brewing Company and Hard Truth Distilling Co.

Art guild opens three new spring exhibits

An opening reception for three new exhibits is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 22 at the Brown County Art Guild. All are on display through May 26.

“Nascence, A Beginning,” in the main and upper galleries, features new works for sale by guild member artists.

“Portrait & Figurative” in the special exhibition gallery includes works by member artists.

“Portrait & Figurative” in the loft gallery contains a new display of rare works from the guild permanent collection.

Hoopnet maker will demonstrate craft March 30

Fourth generation hoopnet maker Larry Haycraft will give a net-making demonstration with his apprentice from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 30 at the Brown County Public Library. After the demonstration, a program will follow at 2 p.m. The event is part of the Traditional Arts Indiana Apprenticeship Program. Guests can learn more about the TAI, new Indiana Heritage Fellowships and traditional arts practices in the state.

Haycraft and his apprentice, his son, Samuel Haycraft, are part of a family known for unique and signature oval nets from Pike County. The nets are made to fish in shallow and swift running water. Samuel marks the fifth generation of net makers in the family.

Photo contest open for preservation subjects

The Indiana Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology is accepting photos for its annual Historic Preservation Month photo contest. It’s looking for photos of something that has been preserved, is in the process of being preserved, or needs to be preserved.

The subject in the photo must be in Indiana and at least 50 years old. It must show something that was designed and/or built. The contest deadline is April 5.

Local artist will paint with children in April

In celebration of Earth Day, local artist Patricia Rhoden-Bartels will conduct painting demonstrations at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14.

On Saturday, Rhoden-Bartels will be set up at a vista at the Brown County State Park Nature Center. On Sunday, she will be at the new Singing Winds Visitor Center at T.C. Steele State Historic Site.

Children ages 5 to 16 can sign up at the state park office to paint along with Rhoden-Bartels at the Nature Center or to interpret a work by art master T.C. Steele at the historic site. Materials will be provided. She will guide up to 15 kids during each painting session. Setup will begin at 1 p.m.; painting will start at 2 p.m.

The state park entrance fee will apply.

The events are part of Arts In The Parks supported by the Indiana Art Council and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Popular Victorian tea planned in April

The Brown County Art Gallery will serve its annual Victorian tea Sunday, April 14. The theme is “Entertaining with Silver in the Victorian Era.”

Doors will open at 12:30 p.m. for shopping with vendors. Tea will be served at 2 p.m., followed by the program. The fundraiser for the gallery foundation will include favors, a raffle and door prizes, as well as contests for “best tea attire” and “best hat.”

Art competition open to high school students

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Trey Hollingsworth (R-Indiana) invites all high school students who are residents of Indiana’s Ninth Congressional District to enter the 2019 Congressional Art Competition. The winner will have his or her artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol for the next year.

Students can submit original, two-dimensional artwork to Hollingsworth’s district offices in Jeffersonville or Franklin. Local artists and others from across the district will judge the competition. The judges’ scores will be worth 80 percent of the overall score, with the number of “likes” each submission receives on Facebook representing the other 20 percent.

To be considered, students must hand-deliver or mail a flash drive with a high-resolution photo of their entry, along with typed release forms, to Hollingsworth’s Jeffersonville or Franklin offices before 5 p.m. Monday, April 15.

Local artist will conduct demonstrations

As part of the Wildflower Foray celebration, local artist Patricia Rhoden-Bartels will conduct painting demonstrations Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28. The demonstrations are part of Arts In The Parks supported by The Indiana Art Council and Indiana DNR.

On Saturday, Rhoden-Bartels will conduct a sunset painting demonstration at 5 p.m. at Brown County State Park’s Hesitation Point. Set-up will begin at 4 p.m. Naturalist David Mow will provide environmental dialog; the park entrance fee will apply.

On Sunday, Rhoden-Bartels will demonstrate plein air painting at 2 p.m. at the T.C. Steele State Historic Site. At  1 p.m., she will set up to paint daffodils or other wildflowers for the demonstration.

Spring art workshops offered downtown

Art workshops are available in April and June at the Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St.

From noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 13, artist Rena Brouwer will teachan “I SEE” shapes and forms workshop. She will guide students in drawing forms, patterns and shapes to create a more spontaneous subject in any media. The workshop costs $58.50 per guild member or $65 per non-member.

“Landscape Painting, Inspired by the Masters” will be taught from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 15, and again Sunday, June 16, by guild member artist Pamela Chase. Each workshop costs $247.50 per guild member or $275 per non-member.

Shared art studio space available in town

B3 Gallery has created a space for artists and the community to come together.

S3, the Nashville “shared studio and maker space” is on the second floor of the gallery at 61 W. Main St. It is a meeting area for artists, craftspeople, inventors, clubs, seminars, classes or individuals.

S3 can provide painting and drawing easels, an alternative process darkroom, macro photography equipment, a digital projector, a glass annealing kiln and burnout kiln, PCB etching equipment and tanks, leaded glass tools, metal forming and casting tools, electronics and robotics fabrication tools, various computer numerical control tools, a scroll saw, band saw, drill press, centrifuge, bench grinder/polisher, laser cutter/engraver, air compressor, vacuum pumps and chemistry vent hood.

The organizers seek “fun, energetic, enthusiastic and creative people to bring life to the space.”

Donations of under-utilized equipment or specialty tools also are being accepted.
