Letter: Election board ‘capable and able to serve you’

To the editor:

I want to assure the citizens and voters of Brown County that despite comments made by former election board member Susanne Gaudin, the election board is capable and able to serve you.

There was no notice given for our second meeting of March 14, 2019. When the newly and duly elected clerk informed me of the oversight, I contacted The Democrat to let them know of the issue immediately. I then received a text stating the clerk had an emergency, and I simply said I, too, had a doctor’s appointment, and it would be difficult for me. But the meeting could not be held due to notice, and I hid nothing, as I am the one who told the press.

It is unfortunate that the board has met one time, and because I would like to do things in a manner that most every other county does, for obvious reasons, have regularly set meetings in the evening for the public and those who work, it is construed as some ignorance on my part. One of the things I hate to hear the most is, “This is the way we have always done it.” Well, sometimes, there are better ways.

Moving forward, we will have agendas posted and sent to the media and all members. All topics can be emailed to the state election board for clarification if needed. Research can be done as well.

There is no need to meet during the day so calls can be made mid-meeting to the state election board. That is simply not conducive to good decision making. Preparation is key.

Ms. Gaudin never sent me an agenda for the March 14 meeting that was ultimately cancelled. Nor was there an agenda posted for the public on the door of the meeting place. That will not be case moving forward so the proper research can be done prior to the meetings and all members are aware and informed of what is discussed. It is not productive for people to walk into a meeting with no idea of the discussion and agenda. Change can and will be good.

The only changes for 2020 are the new machines the county must get. Once the legislation is finalized, we can develop specifications for obtaining the equipment, and making sure all are trained in their use. Any other changes, if they occur at all, can be considered in 2022. The choosing of new machines is enough change for now.

I have worked on elections in various roles for 36 years. I been elected three times and presided over the board of commissioners when I served. I am far from ignorant to how boards function. I pledge to support the clerk and the board in making the best decisions for our community and appreciate the opportunity to serve.

We will have our meetings set for the year when we meet in April. I am simply waiting on the commissioners’ assistant to send me the calendars so we can see what is available so we can set meetings.

I look forward to seeing you, hearing from you and serving you.

Amy Kelso, Brown County
