Portion of State Road 45 to be closed in April

HELMSBURG — A portion of State Road 45 will be closed beginning on or after April 1 as crews work to replace a culvert.

The highway will be closed between Indian Hill and Carmel Ridge roads, said Scott Manning, a media contact with the Indiana Department of Transportation.

The closure is expected to last five days depending on weather.

The contract for the culvert replacement was awarded in October to Oclo Inc. of Batesville for $142,870, Manning said.

Brown County Highway Superintendent Mike Magner said he worked with INDOT to set up an unofficial detour using the upper end of Helmsburg and Lanam Ridge roads for locals. INDOT will pay for any damage to the roads during that time.

Due to problems with the railroad crossing and the low slab bridge on Indian Hill Road, the county will close that road during the culvert replacement to prevent people from using it as a detour, he said.

This story was corrected to state that the closure will last five days starting April 1 instead of the previously reported 30 to 45 days.
