Pioneer Women

The Pioneer Women’s Club meets each Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the History Center, 90 E. Gould St. Interested women are welcome.

Rotary club

The Brown County Rotary Club will meet at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, May 2 at Nashville’s Artists Colony Inn, 105 S. Van Buren St. Kate Nolan, owner, partner and co-founder of DNK Presents, will discuss, “When’s the last time you did something for the first time?”

DNK Presents leads outdoor adventures in backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing, yoga and paddling designed to unplug from technology, reconnect with nature, empower and to build confidence. Free mountain bike rides for women are planned the first Tuesday of each month this year in Brown County State Park as part of DNK Presents.

In 2016, Nolan was a Trek Bicycle Women’s Advocate, one of 55 women chosen out of more than 250 nominees. A board member of Hoosier Mountain Bike Association, mountain bike instructor and “Leave No Waste” trainer, Nolan is certified in CPR and wilderness first aid by the American Heart Association. She and her wife, Danielle married, built a home and moved to Brown County late last year.

Members of the community, especially those interested in learning about and helping with Rotary activities and projects, are welcome.

WRAPS

The Writers, Readers and Poets Society meets from 7 to 9 p.m. on first and third Thursdays each month to read and discuss the literary compositions of those present. The next meetings will be May 2 and 16 at the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane. All are welcome.

Woodworkers club

VAN BUREN TWP. — The Brown County Woodworkers Club will meet and conduct a special event from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 4 at Bill Freeman‘s shop, 7839 Bellsville Pike. The event, open to the public, will run as follows:

  • 2 to 3:30 p.m. — Log-sawing demonstration
  • 3 to 4 p.m. — Club members can sell lumber and sell or swap extra tools. At the seller’s option, some lumber and tool sales will benefit Happy Hollow Children’s Camp.
  • 5 p.m. — The club will serve a cookout for a donation to the children’s camp.

Sewing guild

COLUMBUS — The American Sewing Guild neighborhood group meets at the Bartholomew County REMC, 169 Deaver Road, on the first Saturday of each month from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Each monthly meeting focuses on learning a new sewing or creative skill, or group sewing on philanthropic sewing projects.

The May 4 meeting will feature a presentation by former Pratt School of Design instructor Barbara Livesey of the Brown County Historical Society. She will present several couture garments and a men’s frock coat (c. 1870s) as we explore the construction of these amazing garments.

Bluebird club

The Brown County Bluebird Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7 at the Brown County Public Library. The club will discuss the current bluebird nesting season after watching the video “Bluebirds Up Close.” Everyone is welcome. Genealogy group

The Brown County Genealogical Society meets at 1 p.m. the second Thursday of each month at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. The next meeting is May 9. Meetings are free and all are welcome.

League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters of Brown County has a monthly board meeting from 10 a.m. to noon the second Monday of each month. Meetings are in lower-level meeting room A of the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. The next meeting will be May 13. The public is welcome.

Cemetery society

The Brown County Cemetery Preservation Society, a committee of the Peaceful Valley Heritage group, meets at 4:15 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the archives room at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. The next meeting will be May 14. The public is welcome.

Photography club

The Brown County Photography Club meets from 7 to 9 p.m. the second Tuesday of every month in a lower-level room at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane. The next meeting will be May 14. Anyone interested in photography is welcome.

Rock, mineral club

The Brown County Rock and Mineral Club meets from 5 to 7 p.m. the third Saturday of each month in the Brown County Community Foundation Building, 209 N. Van Buren St. The group hosts rock hunt outings, assists in educational programs, and hosts a rock and mineral show each September. The next meeting is planned May 18. Rock and fossil enthusiasts of all ages are welcome.

Lions club

The Brown County Lions Club meets for dinner at 6:30 p.m. on third Tuesdays at The Seasons Conference Center, 560 State Road 46 East.

The club has been serving the community since 1943 and members live by the motto, “We Serve.” Local, state, national and worldwide programs include: Leader Dogs for the Blind; speech and hearing needs; vision screening, including working with Brown County Schools; cancer and diabetes programs; college scholarships and more.

Discussion group

The adult fourth Wednesday discussion group will meet at 1 p.m. May 22 at the Brown County Public Library. Meetings last about 90 minutes to discuss preselected topics designed to foster conversation, companionship and laughter.
