Umpires sought for youth baseball, softball

Spring therapy walk planned at T.C. Steele

BELMONT — Rachel Ellenson, certified forest therapy guide, will lead a walk through the forests of T.C. Steele State Historic Site from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11.

Marathon races, team relay slated May 18

Dances With Dirt Gnaw Bone, a series of races, will take place Saturday, May 18, starting at Mike’s Dance Barn on State Road 46 West. Each race winds through Brown County State Park and returns to the dance barn. Race options include a 10K, half-marathon (13.1 miles), full marathon (26.2 miles), 50K, 50-mile race or five-team relay (between 2.5 and 6.2 miles per person).

Discounted registration is available through May 16; prices vary from $44 to $94 for individual runners, depending on race length, or $400 for five in a relay team. After the 16th, regular registration prices apply. Registration includes a shirt, medal and a BBQ meal.

Check in will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 17 or from 5:30 a.m. Saturday, May 18 until race time. Races start between 6:15 a.m. (for the 50M and 50K) and 9 a.m. (for the 10K). The relay race begins at 7:30 a.m.

Sports physical night planned at high school

All current Brown County High School students and incoming freshmen can get their sport physicals for $20 on Wednesday, May 22 at the Larry C. Banks Memorial Gymnasium.

Registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. and closes at 7:45 p.m. Exams will be offered between 6 to 7:45 p.m.

Students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and complete the IHSAA physical form. The forms will be valid for next school year. Forms are available at the BCHS athletic office, IHSAA website or on the day of the event.

Free mountain bike rides offered first Tuesdays

Trek Women’s Advocate and professional guide Kate Nolan leads women’s mountain bike rides for riders of all skill levels from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on first Tuesdays in Brown County State Park. The next ride will be June 4. Meet in the parking lot closest to the north gate.

While the rides are free, park entrance fees may apply.

Hard Truth Hills hosting running events

Registration is open for the inaugural Whiskey Chaser Running Festival starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 8 on the grounds of the Hard Truth Hills distillery, 418 Old State Road 46.

Discounted registrations are open for the 5K, 10K, or a 20K-relay for two or four people. A new event, the “shot mile,” will begin at 11 a.m. It gives runners a shot of cinnamon vodka for each lap of the one-third-mile-loop around the Hard Truth lake. The “shot mile” can be added to any other registration or taken separately.

A packet pickup and pizza party is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 7 at Big Woods Pizza, 44 N. Van Buren St.

The day of the event, race registration begins at 6 a.m. and an after-party starts at 9:30 a.m.

Child care available weekdays at YMCA

The Brown County YMCA offers child care for two hours at a time while parents are in the building.

The service is free to Y members and for $2 per child for non-members. Children ages 6 months to 8 years old are welcome. Child watch hours are from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

Kyokushin karate training offered

Sensei David Michaelis is offering training in traditional kyokushin karate.

Classes are for students 16 and older twice a week, at 6 p.m. Thursdays and 4 p.m. Sundays.

Michaelis has trained and taught kyokushin karate for more than 35 years. Kyokushin, Japanese for “the society of the ultimate truth,” is a style of stand-up, full-contact karate. It is intended to foster humility, perseverance and nonviolence and to provide a foundation for improving physical and mental discipline.
