Historic site will host writing workshops in May

BELMONT — Heather Winslow LeFebvre will conduct “Nature Journaling in the Footsteps of T.C. Steele” at T.C. Steele State Historic Site, 4220 T.C. Steele Road. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Saturday, May 18 program will be for people 13 and older.

The events are funded by a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission as part of Arts in the Parks and Historic Sites for 2019.

Paint’N Party in Gnaw Bone set for May 18

GNAW BONE — The Brown County Winery, 4520 State Road 46 East, will offer a guided painting session with Dee Manzenberger at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18.

Local painters to participate in plein air event

BLOOMINGTON — In partnership with Art Alliance Brown County and the Bloomington Watercolor Society, a spring plein air paint-out will take place Saturday, May 18.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hinkle-Garton Farmstead, 2920 E. 10th St. in Bloomington. Brown County artists will be among the painters.

The farmstead includes two historic homes, farmland, gardens and outbuildings. Paintings will go display inside the 1892 Queen Anne-style homestead and will be available for sale.

Mixed media, painting class at B3 Gallery

Artist Lynne Medsker will host two mixed media and painting classes at B3 Gallery, 61 W. Main St., on Saturday, May 18.

Two classes will take place from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Medsker will guide participants through the steps of creating art on Yupo paper using an abstract style with drops, splashes and swirls.

Hoosier Artist Gallery features two artists

The Hoosier Artist Gallery, 45 S. Jefferson St., will feature artists Ruth Wert and Sharon Jungclaus-Gould this month.

Wert is a multi-faceted artist who designs jewelry from antique pins, creates handmade silk scarves and weaves Nantucket baskets.

Jungclaus-Gould is a mixed media artist who creates paintings, collage, jewelry and gourd art.

The Hoosier Artist Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Two exhibits featured at upstairs galleries

Two exhibits are open at B3 and Ascension Fine Arts galleries in the Village Green Building, 61 W. Main St. “Journey to Cuba” is a photo documentary and commentary by Bussert Images at B3 Gallery. “Then and Now,” favorite past and present paintings by Bloomington resident Carole Heslin, is featured at Ascension Fine Arts, an expansion of the second-floor B3 gallery.

Monthly Village Art Walk continues in May

The Fourth Friday Village Art Walk will run from 4 to 7 p.m. May 24 and on other fourth Fridays through October.

Many galleries will have artists on hand, serve refreshments and offer live music. All venues are within walking distance downtown.

Learn to sketch native plants at state park

Rachel Johnson will lead a program, “Sketching Indiana Native Plants,” at Brown County State Park on a series of Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 25, June 22, July 27, Aug. 24 and Sept. 28.

Art guild opens three new spring exhibits

Three new exhibits are open at the Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St. They are all on display through Sunday, May 26.

“Nascence, A Beginning,” in the main and upper galleries, features new works for sale by guild member artists.

“Portrait & Figurative” in the special exhibition gallery includes works by member artists. “Portrait & Figurative” in the loft gallery contains a new display of rare works from the guild permanent collection.

Harp program planned at public library

Two guest harpists from the Jacob School of Music will demonstrate the capabilities and intricacies of two concert grand harps at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 23 at the Brown County Public Library. They will also talk about the history of harps.

Art historian to present program on biography

Local art historian Rachel Berenson Perry will discuss her book, “The Life and Art of Felrath Hines: From Dark to Light,” and answer questions at a Friends of the Brown County Library program from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 23.

The biography covers the life and work of Felrath Hines, who lived from 1913 to 1993, and was the first African-American man to become a professional conservator for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. Hines, an accomplished artist, overcame many obstacles through his life and refused to be pigeonholed by his race.

The program will take place in Room B in the lower level of the Brown County Public Library, 205 N. Locust Lane

Event highlights work created during artist residency

Rachel deCuba will exhibit quilts and felted works she created during her artist residency with the Pioneer Women’s Group at the Brown County History Center.

“As Circular As Hope” will take place Friday, May 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Emerald Pencil, 23 N. Jefferson St. It will feature live music by Aaron Comforty, Nick Harley and Marina Stant.

Paint’N Party set for Visitors Center this month

Local artist Dee Manzenberger will host a patio Paint’N Party at the Brown County Visitors Center, 211 S. Van Buren St., from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 24.

The cost is $15. The event is set to take place during the Fourth Friday Art Walk. Manzenberger will guide participants to paint an 11×14 painting that they can take home. All supplies and materials will be provided.

Reception for photographer featured at local gallery

Ascension Fine Arts, on second floor at 61 W. Main St., will host a reception for Franklin photographer Dan Cook on Friday, May 24 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Ascension will feature Cook’s exhibit “Natural Parks” from May 24 to June 24. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Cook has traveled across the United States photographing nature. This exhibit is a collection of photos from national parks primarily in the West.

Learn to make soap at downtown Nashville shop

New Harmony Soap Co. will teach a beginner’s soap making workshop Saturday, May 25 at the shop, 59 E. Main St. on Old School Way.

Brushless painting classes taught at winery

Local artist Anabel Hopkins has started “Pour ’n More,” a series of art classes centered on a technique of fluid acrylic pouring. This is a brushless form of abstract painting on canvas, tiles and other surfaces.

Hopkins will teach from 1 to 3 p.m. each first Saturday through Sept. 7 at Chateau Thomas Winery, 225 S. Van Buren St. in Coachlight Square. The next will be June 3. All materials and snacks will be provided; beverages will be sold.

Adult art class starting at BETA in June

Beginning in June, local artist M.K. Watkins will teach an adult art class once a week for six weeks at the BETA center, 175 S. Jefferson St.

The class will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays from June 5 through July 10. Class size is limited to 10 and registration is required. No experience is required.

Brown County Inn hosting storytelling nights

The Brown County Radio Hour, in collaboration with the Nashville Arts & Entertainment Commission and the Brown County Inn, is presenting a Story Slam which will conclude on June 13. The topic will be “The Liar’s Bench.”

Each story must be true as the teller remembers it, about themselves, told without notes in front of the audience, and be 5 minutes or less in length.

The event will be recorded and presented as a podcast on the Brown County Radio Hour and the winner will have his or her story featured on an episode of the Brown County Hour on WFHB.

Art workshops are available in June at the Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St.

Register for two-day mixed media workshop in July

BELMONT — Dixie Ferrer will lead an Arts in the Parks workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 20 and 21 at T.C. Steele State Historic Site.

The workshop is two days of mixed media work inspired by a hike in the woods. Participants attend both sessions to work on one piece of art. The event is free with site admission thanks to grants from the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Shared art studio space available in town

B3 Gallery has created a space for artists and the community to come together.

S3, the Nashville “shared studio and maker space” is on the second floor of the gallery at 61 W. Main St. It is a meeting area for artists, craftspeople, inventors, clubs, seminars, classes or individuals.

S3 can provide painting and drawing easels, an alternative process darkroom, macro photography equipment, a digital projector, a glass annealing kiln and burnout kiln, PCB etching equipment and tanks, leaded glass tools, metal forming and casting tools, electronics and robotics fabrication tools, various computer numerical control tools, a scroll saw, band saw, drill press, centrifuge, bench grinder/polisher, laser cutter/engraver, air compressor, vacuum pumps and chemistry vent hood.

The organizers seek “fun, energetic, enthusiastic and creative people to bring life to the space.”
