SCHOOL NEWS: Graduation cap decoration plan approved

The Brown County Schools Board of Trustees unanimously approved a plan created by a group of Brown County High School seniors that will allow them to decorate their graduation caps at commencement this year.

The board voted at the May 2 meeting. BCHS seniors Lilee DeLoach and Macie Morris both attended.

DeLoach, Morris, Evelyn Crimmins and Jackson McPheeters attended the April 18 board meeting to present their plans.

Decorating graduation caps was banned five years ago after a student in the Class of 2014 put a Confederate flag on his cap, offending the keynote speaker and his guests in the audience who were black.

The students’ plan includes students submitting a design of their cap to their advisory teachers. Principal Matt Stark will have final approval. The students’ plan also includes guidelines of what is and is not acceptable. It requires students and their parents to sign a waiver if they wish to decorate their caps.

Commencement will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, June 7 at the Larry C. Banks Memorial Gymnasium.
