Boys basketball camp offered this summer

Boys entering kindergarten through eighth grade are welcome to attend summer basketball camp to work with Brown County High School basketball players.

Campers will learn new skills and drills, footwork, passing, defensive positioning and proper shot form. All campers will get a T-shirt and certificate at the end of camp and be recognized at halftime of a varsity home game next season.

Camp will take place Monday, June 24 to Thursday, June 27 for Grades K to 5.

The session for incoming kindergartners through second-graders will run from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Brown County Intermediate School gym.

The session for incoming third- through fifth-graders will run from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the high school gym.

The cost is $25 per camper, cash or check made out to Brown County Boys Basketball. Registration forms are available at local schools or by contacting Coach Josh Berning at [email protected]. Registration is preferred by Wednesday, May 29 (the last day of school); payment can be brought to the first day of camp.

Sessions for incoming sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders took place June 10-14 and June 17-19.

Girls basketball, volleyball camps offered

Girls entering the second through eighth grades are welcome to participate in summer basketball and volleyball camps, receiving instruction from Brown County High School coaches and players.

Campers will learn the fundamentals and concepts of each sport from coaches Matt Roberts and Jessica Robertson. Early registrants will receive a free Lady Eagles T-shirt if registered by June 21.

The volleyball session will take place Tuesday, July 9 to Thursday, July 11. The basketball session will take place Tuesday, July 16 through Thursday, July 18.

The sessions for incoming second-graders through fourth-graders will run from 5 to 6 p.m in the Brown County High School gym.

The sessions for incoming fifth-graders through eighth-graders will run from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m.

The cost is $25 per camper in Grades 2 to 4 and $35 for campers in Grades 5 to 8. There are combo deals available if campers wish to participate in both camps: $45 for campers Grades 2 to 4 and $65 for campers in Grades 5 to 8.

Swim lessons offered at state park pool

The Brown County State Park Pool will offer swimming lessons at three levels beginning Monday, July 8 from 11 to 11:35 a.m. Classes meet daily and end Friday, July 19.

Preschool (3 to 5 years old): Focuses on introduction to the water and improvement of safety and comfort in the swimming pool. Children will learn elementary skills, including water entry, bubble blowing, flutter kick, backfloat, underwater exploration and more.

Beginner (6 years or older): For participants who are taking swim lessons for the first time. Emphasis is on water adjustment, swimming readiness skills, basic safety, floating, kicking and arm strokes.

Intermediate: For children who are confident in the water and know basic swimming skills. Arm position, leg exercises and breathing will be practiced.

Classes are $60 per child and include a free park pass during swim lessons. Parents and guardians are asked to observe outside the fence after dropping off their child.

Child care available weekdays at YMCA

The Brown County YMCA offers child care for two hours at a time while parents are in the building.

The service is free to Y members and for $2 per child for non-members. Children ages 6 months to 8 years old are welcome. Child watch hours are from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

Umpires sought for youth baseball, softball

Kyokushin karate training offered

Sensei David Michaelis is offering training in traditional kyokushin karate.

Classes are for students 16 and older twice a week, at 6 p.m. Thursdays and 4 p.m. Sundays.

Michaelis has trained and taught kyokushin karate for more than 35 years. Kyokushin, Japanese for “the society of the ultimate truth,” is a style of stand-up, full-contact karate. It is intended to foster humility, perseverance and nonviolence and to provide a foundation for improving physical and mental discipline.

Learn biking basics at Hard Truth Hills

DNK Presents will host a series of Busted Knuckle Co-Ed Bike Clinics at Hard Truth Hills, 418 Old State Road 46, which began June 15. The next session is Saturday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to noon. Learn skills from Kate Nolan, a certified professional mountain biker and Trek bicycle women’s advocate.

The fee is $50 per person and includes the two-hour clinic and a drink at Hard Truth Hills after the session. Discounted bike rentals are available through Bicycle Station Columbus if needed.

Meet Milan team; support Kirlin endowment

Golf outing, reunion planned at golf course

Salt Creek Golf Retreat will host two events on Saturday, July 13: The 65th reunion of the 1954 Milan Indians basketball team and the Chuck & Will Kirlin Golf Outing.

The 1954 Milan Indians — Bobby Plump, Gene White, Ray Craft, Rollin Cutter and Roger Schroder — will gather at the golf retreat, 2359 State Road 46, Saturday, July 13 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Guests can share basketball memories from one of the greatest times in Indiana basketball. Tickets are $25 per person, with profits going to the Milan Museum. Only 100 tickets will be sold.

The reunion will be followed by the fourth annual Chuck & Will Kirlin Golf Outing, will all profits going to Chuck’s Endowment with the Brown County Community Foundation (BCCF). The outing costs $300 for a foursome. Tee time is at noon. Prizes will come from the Cincinnati Reds and Indiana Pacers.

The “Milan Meet & Greet” will be free for those participating in the golf outing.

Those who do not participate in the outing can watch the Milan vs. Terre Haute Gerstmeyer game — the afternoon game in 1954 — and the final game between Milan and Muncie Central, the game from the film “Hoosiers.”

Habitat for Humanity coed softball tournament

COLUMBUS — Brown County Habitat for Humanity will host a softball tournament at Dunn Stadium, 878 Spears St., Thursday, Aug. 4 to raise money and awareness for the organization.

“Roll the Home Run Dice” challenge is $10, or it is $150 per team playing in the tournament.

Individuals and/or merchants are able to donate money to sponsor or form a team.

Habitat for Humanity is a 501c3 charity, with all donations being tax-deductible and Habitat providing the required paperwork.
