Man arrested after pursuit with police

An Indianapolis man was arrested on June 16 in Brown County after he failed to stop for a traffic violation and was pursued by police officers.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Nicholson Briles was patrolling near Eagle Park on State Road 46 East when he saw a vehicle drive by with a taillight bulb burnt out.

Briles tried to initiate a traffic stop in front of the Brown County Law Enforcement Center, but the vehicle — driven by Jacob Schoenborn, 36, Indianapolis — continued to drive east and turn on North Van Buren Street, an incident report states.

Briles turned on his emergency sirens, but the vehicle continued driving north before turning on West Main Street. The vehicle continued to obey traffic signals, but would not pull over for Briles.

The vehicle continued west on Helmsburg Road before turning on to McLary Road and going into Deer Run Park. Nashville Police Officer Abigail Beaver and Deputy Josh Stargell responded to assist Briles at this point.

Stargell pulled into the park’s gravel lot to try and stop Schoenborn’s vehicle between his and Briles’ police vehicles. Schoenborn then stopped and Briles aimed his gun at the vehicle, giving commands for Schoenborn to show his hands, the report states.

At that point, Briles reported hearing Schoenborn say he wanted the officers to shoot him. At that time, EMS was contacted to stage nearby. Schoenborn then put his car in gear and drove away again.

All three officers were in pursuit and Briles had his emergency sirens on, but Schoenborn continued to drive north on Helmsburg Road before coming to a stop north of Annandale Drive. At that point, both Briles and Stargell had their guns out commanding Schoenborn to stick his hands out the window.

Schoenborn put his hands out the window, but then put them back inside and began yelling vulgarities at the officers before driving away again.

Officers followed the vehicle as it turned onto Morrison Road from Helmsburg Road at speeds ranging from 25 to 30 MPH.

At the intersection of State Road 45 and Morrison Road, Sheriff Scott Southerland was able to move his truck in front of Schoenborn’s vehicle to prevent it from going any further.

Schoenborn continued to ignore officer commands and yelled vulgarities at them. While officers gave him verbal commands, Southerland was able to go around the vehicle and use a stun gun on Schoenborn. He was then removed from the vehicle and EMS arrived to remove the Taser prongs, the report states.

Briles took Schoenborn to a hospital to be medically cleared before being taken to jail. He reported smelling alcohol on Schoenborn. Earlier in the pursuit, Beaver reported seeing Schoenborn drink something as he was driving, the report states.

An inventory of his car yielded multiple empty beer cans and an open box of beer in the backseat that was cold. There was also a partially drunk beer in the center console cup holder, the report said.

A search warrant for Schoenborn’s blood was granted; a blood draw was taken at Columbus Regional Hospital.

While getting ready to leave the hospital, Schoenborn said he was sorry he tried to run from police and he explained that he was scared for his life, the report said.

His vehicle was towed.

On June 17, Schoenborn was charged with resisting law enforcement, a Level 6 felony; and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor.
