Candidates file for town council, clerk-treasurer elections

Brown County will not have an election this fall, but the Town of Nashville will.

Two seats on the Nashville Town Council and the Nashville clerk-treasurer job will be on the ballot.

The filing deadline for independent or minor-party candidates was July 1. So far, the ballot includes the following candidates:

Town council Dist. 2: Alisha Gredy, Andrew W. Tilton

Town council Dist. 3: Jane Gore, Mike “Possum” Roberts

Town clerk-treasurer: Brenda Young

In recent history, town elections have been nonpartisan. However, political parties can nominate town candidates to run under their party’s banner, or candidates can take it upon themselves to run as Democrats or Republicans.

Brad King, co-director of the Indiana Election Division, explained this in an email exchange with the newspaper last fall: “In some small towns it has become a tradition for candidates to run as ‘independent’ or ‘citizens party’ candidates, but if a candidate wished to run as a candidate of a political party, that is the candidate’s choice,” he wrote. “Under state law, the municipality could not prevent that.

All candidates declaring a party affiliation have until noon Aug. 1 to file their candidacy paperwork for the town election at the Brown County clerk’s office in the courthouse, said Brown County Clerk Kathy Smith.
