Blood drive planned at high school

Versiti Blood Center of Indiana will have a mobile blood drive Friday, July 12 from 2 to 7 p.m. in the lobby of the Larry C. Banks Memorial Gynmasium at Brown County High School, 235 Schoolhouse Lane.

World War I display now at History Center

The Indiana Historical Society has set up a traveling display of the “Great War,” World War I, at the Brown County History Center, 90 E. Gould St. It features Brown County-related items from WWI. It will be open through mid-July.

The History Center hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Pioneer Village across the street from the History Center is open Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.

Market to feature live music, recycling

BEAN BLOSSOM — The farmers market at St. David’s Episcopal Church will be open from 4 to 7 p.m. each Friday through Aug. 31. The church is at state roads 45 and 135 North.

Each week, the market will have a demonstration table encouraging ways to reuse and recycle; conserve and preserve; methods of growing and cooking nutritional food; doing household cleaning without chemicals; and identifying invasive plants and encouraging native plants.

Other topics on growing, gardening and protecting the environment will be introduced throughout the weeks.

Chefs Eli and Rich will be at the market café preparing and serving pulled pork and beef brisket sandwiches.

Thrive Alliance will be featured in the St. David’s outreach community service booth. It offers services for seniors, home-based case management and other programs.

The Indiana Blood Center’s Bloodmobile will be at the market on July 26. Market Manager Sandy Higgins will be seeking and scheduling donors from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. that Friday. To donate, sign up at the Outreach Booth on market days or call Higgins.

SNAP, WIC and senior farmers market vouchers are honored for eligible purchases. SNAP tokens are available in the outreach booth.

Library to host informational meeting

The Safe Place program will host an informational meeting at the Brown County Library, 205 Locust Lane, Thursday, July 11 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The program is looking to recruit more host homes in Brown County and surrounding areas to place children in an emergency.

Food pantry open at Sprunica Baptist Church

SPRUNICA — Every second Saturday, Sprunica Baptist Church, 3902 Sprunica Road, will open its food pantry from 8:30 to 11 a.m. The next date is July 13.

Food and personal care items are available at the pantry. Coffee and donuts also will be served.

Snake Fest planned at park Nature Center

Visit the Nature Center at Brown County State Park Saturday, July 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Snake Fest. Get up close and personal with a variety of snakes and other reptiles, learning about what they are and where to find them. The event is free, there’s a $7 entry fee at the park gate.

Store to have used stamp and craft sale

Wishful Thinking, 150 S. Old School Way, will host its annual Used Stamp and Craft Sale Wednesday, July 12 through Saturday, July 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. Only cash will be accepted.

A preview party is planned on Tuesday, July 9 at 3 p.m. for those participating in the sale. Doors open on Friday, July 12 at 10 a.m. for people who are not selling their items in the sale.

Firefighters will serve fish fries monthly

BEAN BLOSSOM — Fruitdale volunteer firefighters will host fish fries from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturdays, July 13, Aug. 24, Sep. 7 and Oct. 5 at the fire station, 5200 State Road 135 North.

Volunteers prepare the food and provide a combo plate for $9, a number of side dishes, drinks and desserts, along with hot dogs and breaded tenderloins.

Celebration at Bean Blossom Baptist Church

BEAN BLOSSOM — Bean Blossom Baptist Church, 5858 Spearsville Road, will host its homecoming and 47th anniversary celebration beginning Sunday, July 14. Morning service begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by a pitch-in, and afternoon service at 1:30 p.m.

Nightly revival services will take place Monday through Friday, July 15 to 18, at 7 p.m. each night. Evangelist Brian McBride will be preaching from the King James Bible and the McBride Family will be singing out of the hymnbook.

There will be no Sunday School or evening service on Sunday, July 14.

History programs for kids offered downtown

The Hands on History program, for children ages 8 to 12, will take place monthly on Thursdays at the Brown County History Center on the following dates: July 18, Aug. 15, Sept. 29 and Oct. 24. The program enables children to engage in many of the day-to-day activities experienced by children living in pioneer times. Activities take place from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Pioneer Village and the History Center, 90 E. Gould St.

Planned topics tied to history will include hearthside cooking; dyeing yarn and weaving; household chores; Hoosier inventions; wildlife; braille and sign language; the Indiana state flag, seal, song, foods and tree; and one-room schoolhouse.

Bombing prevention awareness course scheduled

The County Office Building, 201 Locust Lane, will host the Department of Homeland Security’s Bombing Prevention Awareness Course on Friday, July 19 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The course provides knowledge of general bombing prevention measures, from improvised explosive device (IED) construction and classification through protective measures for potential bombing incidents. It is designed for “critical infrastructure” owner/operators, public safety personnel, emergency managers, law enforcement and special event security personnel.

There is no charge for the event. Lunch is not provided.

Thrive Alliance to offer caregiver support

Thrive Alliance will be starting a caregiver support and education group beginning Thursday, July 25 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Nashville United Methodist Church, 36 S. Jefferson St.

The purpose of the group is to offer support, information and education for anyone acting as a caregiver for a family member or loved one.

Required ServSafe class offered in July

A ServSafe Food Manager Certification class will be taught Tuesday and Wednesday, July 23 and 24 in the Salmon Room at the County Office Building, 201 Locust Lane. Start time for both days is 8:30 a.m., concluding at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday and 2:30 p.m.

ServSafe Food Manager Certification is good for five years. All retail food establishments must have a certified food manager on staff unless they are a nonprofit or serve only pre-packaged food.

The cost is $125 for the text, class and test. The class is limited to 12 participants.

Playhouse to host guitar festival, contest

The Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St., will host some of the nation’s finest musicians at the Indiana State Fingerstyle Guitar Fest Saturday, July 27.

Spectators can enjoy the talent and skill of performers as they compete for the grand prize: handmade guitars and the opportunity to play at the evening concert. Daytime competition begins at 11 a.m. Tickets are $16.50. Wristbands will be issued so that attendees may come and go. The evening concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $24.50 or $34.50 for VIP seating.

The concert will feature the winner of the daytime competition as well as previous international winners Christie Lenée, Helen Avakian and Muriel Anderson.

Market doing weekly ‘Market Bucks’ drawing

The Nashville Farmers Market is open Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Brown County Inn, 51 State Road 46 East.

The market has launched a free weekly drawing for “Market Bucks.” Visitors can enter to win market bucks that can be redeemed at any market vendor. Vendors offer an array of local produce, meat, baked goods, plants, and artisanal crafts and gifts.

Game library available at Toy Chest

The Toy Chest, 125 S. Van Buren St., has created a game library that locals can use for a $10 annual membership fee.

Game library members can check out one game at the Toy Chest register. Games can be kept for a week or they can be renewed for another week. If the game is late, $1 will be charged each day up to the price of the game.

Bluebird box sale to benefit local club

Recycle center will take bagged trash for $2

The Brown County Recycle Center now accepts trash at its drive-through during regular hours, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

Drop-off costs $2 per bag. The center offers prepaid sticker books for $10 or $20, with five or 10 yellow stickers to affix to trash bags up to 55 gallons.

Book-a-Librarian service offered

Individuals or small groups can make an appointment with a Brown County Public Library librarian through the free Book-a-Librarian service. Sessions are limited to 30 to 60 minutes and are best used for instruction on how to use the library catalog, databases, digital resources and the Internet. Call 812-988-2850 for an appointment.
