Swim lessons starting soon at the YMCA

The Brown County YMCA is offering swim lessons for learners as young as 12 months. Lessons will last 45 minutes and will take place each Saturday for six weeks, Aug. 17 through Sept. 21.

  • 10 a.m. — Tadpoles (12 months to 3 years): This class will focus on comfort with the water and water safety. In addition to splash and play time, the instructor will lead kids through an organized cycle of swimming fundamentals.
  • 11 a.m. — Minnows (ages 3 to 5): The class focuses on an introduction to the water and improvement of the child’s safety and comfort in the pool. Children learn water entry, bubble blowing, flutter kick, back float and more.
  • Noon — Guppies (ages 5 and older): This class is for participants who are comfortable in the water but need to develop fundamental skills to be a better swimmer. Emphasis will be on water adjustment, floating, kicking and beginning to swim independently.

The cost is $40 for Y members or $60 for non-members. Parents are asked to drop their children off and then leave the pool area, but they may observe from the upstairs weight room windows they wish. There will be 15 minutes between each class for class transitions and parent/instructor discussion.

Private swim lessons will be offered with a Y lifeguard for kids and adults, ages 6 and older. Sessions are in one- or half-hour time slots.

To join the club, send an email to Jill Vance, Monroe Lake’s interpretive naturalist, at [email protected] at least four days before the first club meeting you wish to attend.

The club meets at 10 a.m. on one Sunday each month at Paynetown State Recreation Area for 60 to 90 minutes. Meetings take place entirely outdoors, rain or shine. Remaining meeting dates in 2019 are Aug. 18, Sept. 15, Oct. 13, Nov. 17 and Dec. 15.
