Literary club

The Nashville Literary Club will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15 at Willow Manor, 72 Willow St. Barb Newton will lead a discussion of “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston.

The Nashville Literary Club celebrated its 85th anniversary at the club’s April meeting. It was founded in 1934 to encourage reading and an appreciation of literature.

Ann Callahan shared some bits of information from the club’s long history and Gail Huff led a discussion on “H Is for Hawk” by Helen Macdonald.

Founding members of the club included Mrs. Dale Bessire, Mrs. J.P. Bessire, Mrs. L.O. Griffith and Mrs. A.R. Shulz. Some of the old programs had original art scenes painted on the covers, but the artwork was not signed.

At least 300 women have enjoyed discussing literature together over those 85 years, and more than 850 books were collectively read.

Officers for 2019 are President Karen Sparks, Vice President Barb Newton, Secretary/Treasurer Gail Huff and Historian Ann Callahan.

Rotary club

The Brown County Rotary Club will meet at 7:15 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15 at Nashville’s Artists Colony Inn, 105 S. Van Buren St.

The guest speaker will be Clint Studabaker, a retired professional civil and environmental engineer. He will discuss many of the concerns involving residential wastewater in Brown County and some of the current efforts being made to address these issues.

Studabaker received a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Purdue University, and executive MBA from Northern Illinois University and a master’s degree in teaching from National Lewis University.

Prior to retiring to Brown County in 2015, Studabaker directed project activity for numerous Fortune 500 clients involving environmental and waste services; lowering environmental liabilities; and resolving wastewater, waste disposal and groundwater contamination issues. In his early days, he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad as the emergency responder for train derailments involving hazardous materials.

He managed a business unit for environmental engineering, consulting and construction services that served clients throughout North America and around the globe. Projects included Superfund remediation sites, hazardous waste incinerators, mobile wastewater treatment units, mobile laboratories for groundwater analysis and energy production through landfill gas-to-energy plants.

In 2018, Studabaker was appointed by the Brown County Council to serve on the Brown County Regional Sewer District board of directors. He also serves on the Brown County Playhouse board and the Pine Tree Hills Homeowners Association board. Last fall, he joined the Brown County Board of Health septic ordinance rewrite committee in an effort to create an ordinance compatible with Indiana Code and specific to the unique characteristics of Brown County soils and terrain.

Members of the community — especially those interested in learning about and helping with Rotary activities and projects — are invited to attend.
