Driver runs out of gas, gets arrested

VAN BUREN TWP. — A 25-year-old Brown County man was arrested on drug charges Aug. 17 after police responded to a report of a driver running out of gas and found him passed out in the driver’s seat.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Colton Magner responded to the call just after 1 a.m. on Harrison Ridge Road. Magner reported finding the driver, Dylan Hadley, unconscious and lying halfway out of the car in the driver’s seat, a probable-cause affidavit states.

Magner called EMS and Sgt. Scott Bowling to the scene.

He reported finding a piece of aluminum foil near Hadley’s knee on the ground and a blue straw between his lips, the affidavit states.

Magner woke Hadley up and he told Magner that he ran out of gas. He said he should not have been driving. He told Magner that his driver’s license was suspended, and that he and his girlfriend had been in an argument in Columbus and the police had separated them for the evening. He said he had no other choice but to drive home.

Magner noted that Hadley was having trouble standing on his own and that his body was moving nonstop and in an “unusual, uncontrolled manner.”

Hadley told the officer that he had taken Valium pills by snorting them through the straw. He said he had used the pills before driving and running out of gas. Hadley told the officer he used to have a prescription for Valium. Magner reported finding multiple pills with additional straw pieces in the car.

While being checked by EMS, Hadley said he had used heroin that morning, the police report said. Magner reported that the foil contained heroin.

Hadley was booked into jail after being cleared by the hospital. On Aug. 20, he was charged with possession of a narcotic drug, a Level 6 felony; unlawful possession or use of a legend drug, a Level 6 felony; possession of paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor; driving while suspended, a Class A misdemeanor; and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor.

Report: Police find pot plants

A 61-year-old Brown County man faces a misdemeanor after police responded to his home for a domestic disturbance and found he was growing marijuana outside, court paperwork says.

On Aug. 10, deputies with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department responded to the home of David Hazelgrove for a report of a man chasing people at his house with a bat.

Police spoke with two women and a man who were at the house drinking with Hazelgrove. The witnesses said that Hazelgrove had become upset and was trying to fight people, according to the probable-cause affidavit.

One of the women was staying with him and Hazelgrove had demanded she leave. Police found her at a neighbor’s house. The woman complained of minor injuries and said she may have broken her finger. Hazelgrove had an injury on his head from where the woman had hit him with a fire poker. Both refused further treatment by EMS.

Hazelgrove had given police permission to search his property for the woman who had hit him. During that search they found two marijuana plants growing on his back porch. Both plants were pulled up by their roots and placed into evidence.

When asked about the plants, Hazelgrove told police he had three growing and showed officers the other plant growing behind an old barn on the back side of his property.

He was arrested and taken to the Brown County jail. On Aug. 16, Hazelgrove was charged with possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor.
