A 95-year-old Taylorsville woman was killed in a crash over Labor Day weekend on State Road 135 South in Brown County.

The crash was reported just before 4 p.m. Sept. 1 near the State Road 46 East intersection, according to an accident report received today by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Chad Williams.

The victim, Doris Mayes, was a passenger in a 1995 Ford Ranger driven by Kevin Burton, 64, of Taylorsville. The truck was heading north on 135 South when Burton crossed the center line while going around a right curve. His truck struck a Dodge Ram pickup pulling a trailer driven by Daniel Smith, 41, of Nashville.

Burton’s vehicle spun around and faced west, the report said.

Mayes and Burton were listed with the same address on the police report. Both were not wearing seat belts, the report said. Williams wrote that it appeared both hit their heads on the windshield.

Mayes was breathing and had a pulse after the crash, but she passed away in an ambulance while waiting on a medical helicopter to take her to a hospital, the report states. Coroner Earl Piper said Mayes died from multiple blunt force trauma to the head and chest area.

Burton reported having chest pains. A second ambulance was called to transport him. After Mayes passed away, Burton was taken by the medical helicopter to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital for further treatment.

Smith, the other driver, was assisting the local EMS crew when police arrived, as he is a full-time paramedic with a paid fire department, the police report said.

Smith told police he was driving south and when he started into the left curve, he noticed Burton’s vehicle crossing the center line. Smith said he moved his vehicle over as far as he could to avoid a collision, but that Burton’s vehicle struck both his truck and trailer.

Burton’s vehicle was towed.

Smith was wearing a seat belt.
