In Brown County, art isn’t simply a hobby; it’s a way of life. During October, visitors can catch a glimpse of this lifestyle.

The Back Roads of Brown County Studio Tour is a free, self-guided driving tour of the “Art Colony of the Midwest.” Every day this month, visitors can see the work of 28 artisans at 19 studios, meet the artisans, watch them work and explore their work spaces, spend time talking with them and learning their stories, experience the inspiration behind the art, and buy items directly from the artists who made them.

The historic studio and home of one of Brown County’s first artists, T.C. Steele, is included on the tour.

Guests on the tour will be able to see paintings, pottery, jewelry, weaving, glass, basket-weaving, metalwork and woodworking. Other unique goods include hand-bound books, gourd art, blacksmithing, fiber dyed with natural dyes, shaker furniture, calligraphy, fused glass, stitched paper artwork and limestone carving.

A free map and guide are available at browncountystudiotour.com or at the Brown County Visitors Center, 211 S. Van Buren St., as well as at participating businesses in Nashville.

Studios are open daily throughout October from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some studio hours vary and are noted on the map. No reservations are required.

The Brown County Studio Tour is an artist-run nonprofit that creates opportunities for the public to interact with working artists in their work spaces.
