Annual bike festival to take place at state park

The 15th annual Big Woods Brown County Epic Bike Festival will take place at Brown County State Park Friday through Sunday, Oct. 11 to 13.

Riders can take on a variety of flowing single-track during the prime autumn season. After a long day of riding routes of 25 to 100 miles on Saturday, participants can enjoy a post-ride BBQ with live music, then sleep in on Sunday and take an easy ride or demo some new bikes.

The festival includes camping, bike demos, a beer garden, group rides, clinics, games, raffles, live entertainment, BBQ and food by Big Woods throughout the weekend for purchase. All proceeds benefit the Hoosier Mountain Bike Association, which builds new trails every year.

Soap making, goat yoga scheduled at local farm

BELMONT — Join The Goat Conspiracy, 6022 Kent Road, for morning goat yoga at the farm on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 10 to 11 a.m. Instructor Tyler Ferguson will adapt this class to all ability levels. Class will take place an open shelter with sand flooring. Yoga mats are provided.

The cost is $20 per person. Space is limited, pre-registration is required.

Hike, kayak or tour Brown County with guide

YELLOWWOOD — Paddlers can explore the Saddle Creek and Hayes Hollow area of the Hoosier National Forest on a sunset kayak tour on Sundays, Oct. 13 and 20 from 5 to 7:45 p.m.

The tour will paddle west back to the boat ramp as the sun sets, from the Cutright State Recreation Area boat ramp on Lake Monroe, southeast of Bloomington.

The cost is $45 per person and includes kayak rental.

Other guided kayak tours are being offered during the daytime. Guide David Rupp will give instruction on how to safely and efficiently paddle a kayak and then lead a tour around the lake, while teaching participants about the history of the Brown County forests and the birds that live here. The schedule is:

  • Fridays, Oct. 11, 18, 25 and Nov. 1, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Saturdays, Oct. 26 and Nov. 8, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 22, 24, 29 and 31, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The cost is $35 per person. Kayaks and all needed equipment will be provided.

Rupp also will lead Fall Color Nature Hikes in remote parts of Brown County on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 22: Yellowwood State Forest
  • Wednesday, Oct. 23: Laura Hare Preserve at Downey Hill
  • Thursday, Oct. 24: Stone Head Nature Preserve
  • Tuesday, Oct. 29: Hitz-Rhodehamel Nature Preserve
  • Thursday, Oct. 31: Hitz-Rhodehamel Nature Preserve

All hikes are from 9:30 a.m. to noon and cost $20 per person. Directions to meeting locations will be emailed upon registration. All locations are within a 15-minute drive of Nashville.

Wrestling club to start at end of month

Brown County Parks and Rec has opened registration for a youth wrestling club. Practices will begin Tuesday, Oct. 29 and continue through Dec. 17.

The program emphasizes core skill development for students in the first through fourth grades. The USA Wrestling seven base skills — position, motion, level change, clearing, lifting, back step and arch and turn — will be followed.

Practices will take place on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Larry C. Banks Memorial Gymnasium wrestling room. Parental assistance is requested.

The fee is $30 per student and includes a Brown County Wrestling T-shirt. The deadline to register is Friday, Oct. 25. Register at the parks and rec office, 1001 Deer Run Lane, or online at bcparksrec.com.

Wellness retreat set at Story Inn in November

STORY — Erica Weddle of Simply Fitness will offer a retreat at Story Inn, 6404 State Road 135 South, Thursday, Nov. 7 to Sunday, Nov. 10. Guests will have the opportunity to explore different versions of yoga, homemade meals and hike to Browning mountain with a back country lunch. Child care available weekdays at YMCA

The Brown County YMCA offers child care for two hours at a time while parents are in the building.

The service is free to Y members and for $2 per child for non-members. Children ages 6 months to 8 years old are welcome. Child watch hours are from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

Kyokushin karate training offered

Sensei David Michaelis is offering training in traditional kyokushin karate.

Classes are for students 16 and older twice a week, at 6 p.m. Thursdays and 4 p.m. Sundays.

Michaelis has trained and taught kyokushin karate for more than 35 years. Kyokushin, Japanese for “the society of the ultimate truth,” is a style of stand-up, full-contact karate. It is intended to foster humility, perseverance and nonviolence and to provide a foundation for improving physical and mental discipline.
