Visit artists at working studios every day in October in various locations across Brown County. Meet artists, watch them work, explore their studios and buy a wide variety of handmade work directly from the artists.

Pick up a free tour map at the Visitors Center in Nashville, 211 S. Van Buren St. Some studio hours vary and are listed on the map.

Open houses set for local artist

YELLOWWOOD — James Tracy, painter, print-maker and designer, is having an open house at his studio, 457 Dubois Ridge Road in Yellowwood State Forest, on Saturdays, Oct. 19 and 26, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Follow signs posted to the studio.

Tracy is a long-time member of the Brown County Art Gallery Association in Nashville, Indiana. He has won major awards in many juried exhibitions including The Hoosier Salon, Indiana Heritage Arts shows, Annual Exhibitions at the Salmagundi Club in New York City and numerous fine art exhibitions throughout the United States. His work is included in the permanent collection of the Indiana State Museum.

New exhibits, sales at the guild

The Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St., is featuring three exhibitions in their gallery for the next several months.

The Member Artist’s Fall Exhibition show and sale will hang until Feb. 16 and features celebrated members.

The Founders Exhibition will hang until Dec. 1. It is a collection of privately held works by the 17 founding artists of the Brown County Art Guild. Their inaugural exhibition was held in the fall of 1954. Select works are for sale.

Artists in this collection include Elizabeth Baum, Marie Goth, Gordon Mess, Dale Bessire, Genevieve Goth Graf, Frederick W. Rigley, C. Curry Bohm, L. O. Griffith, Derk Smit, Anthony Buchta, Rena Hostetler, Musette Stoddard, V. J. Cariani, Georges LaChance, Arnold Turtle, Ken Gore and Al LaToor.

The Guild wishes to thank the individual lenders for this exhibition.

The Memorial Exhibition will close Dec. 1.

There is also a collection of paintings for sale from the estates of four former Guild artist members: Robert Hoffman, Roger Merkel, Rob O’Dell and Wayne Waldron.

Busy fall season continues at the Playhouse

Every Thursday in October, Eric Brown and Jenn Cristy will present a multitude of musical sensibilities in an acoustic concert at the Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren Street. Doors open at 7 p.m. with the show starting at 7:30 p.m.; concessions will be sold. Tickets are $21.50 for adults or $20.50 for military, seniors and students. Tcket prices do not include additional ticket fees.

“RESPECT — The Women of Soul” will be at the Playhouse every Friday in October, celebrating 60 years of women in music, featuring songs by Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, the Supremes, Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Adele and more. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.; concessions will be sold. Tickets are $21.50 for adults or $20.50 for military, seniors and students. An Elvis Presley tribute show will be featured Saturday, Oct. 26. Tyler Christopher will perform the King’s hits “Hound Dog,” “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Suspicious Minds” and many more. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $23.50 for adults, or $22.50 for military, seniors and students. Concessions, beer, wine and mixed drinks will be sold.

Revisit musical classics at “The Birth of Rock and Roll,” Friday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Audiences can enjoy songs of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Holly, who will all be represented by the cast.

Arts program available at library

All are welcome to visit the Brown County Public Library to learn about dulcimers on Sunday, Oct. 20 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Tony Sosbe will explain how dulcimers are constructed and bring examples of handmade dulcimers. Participants will be able to listen to dulcimer music, receive tips on playing dulcimers and try one out.

Community band to celebrate 20 years with concert

The Brown County Community Band will celebrate 20 years of providing music to Brown County at its annual anniversary concert on Sunday, Oct. 20 at Nashville United Methodist Church, 46 S. Jefferson St., at 7:30 p.m.

Galleries feature local artists in Fourth Friday Art Walk

The final Fourth Friday Art Walk of 2019 will take place Friday, Oct. 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. in downtown Nashville.

Ascension Fine Arts/B3 Gallery, 61 W. Main St. on the second floor of the Village Green Building, will host “Indiana Through the Seasons,” a special showing of work by Bloomington photographer Gary Morrison. An artist’s reception will be held during the art walk. The show will hang through November.

Morrison is a retired professor who developed his appreciation for nature while hiking and hunting with his father. He purchased his first camera, a Brownie knockoff, when he was 10 years old. He now spends his days traveling the back roads of southern Indiana, photographing the beauty of the area and meeting folks along the way. His work is filled with sweeping vistas, intimate details and the many moods of Indiana.

Gallery members of the The Hoosier Artist Gallery, 45 S. Jefferson St., will be purging extra art, supplies, tools and more to benefit the gallery on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25 and 26; Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. during the Art Walk; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Second annual art and craft market in October

Visit Parkview Church of the Nazarene, 1750 State Road 46 East, on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the second annual Brown County Handmade Market.

The craft show features handmade creations from more than 70 vendors from Brown County and across the Midwest. There will be snack booths, kids’ activities and a silent auction, with proceeds benefiting ministries of Parkview Church.

Local potters to be featured in Bloomington show and sale

BLOOMINGTON — The Local Clay Potters’ Guild 22nd Annual Pottery Show and Sale will be in the Great Room on the second floor of the Monroe Convention Center, 302 S. College Avenue, on Friday, Nov. 1, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Members of Local Clay Potters Guild along with guest artists will host their 22nd annual fall show and sale, displaying more than 4,000 pieces of functional pottery and sculpture. Meet the 23 potters, watch demonstrations on Saturday and enjoy the fall community event.

Playhouse celebrates 70th year

The Brown County Playhouse, 70 S. Van Buren St., will celebrate their 70th anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 6:15 to 9:30 p.m.

The night will feature a live concert with Jenn Cristy, Eric Brown and Friends along with cake, karaoke and special surprises.

A winner of the online art auction will be announced at the birthday party, winning a painting donated by artist Patricia Rhoden Bartels.

Show to feature local musician in anniversary celebration

BROWNSTOWN — Writers and performers will be featured in a live songwriter-in-the-round show at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Royal-off-the-Square Theatre, 121 W. Walnut St. in Brownstown.

Several musicians will perform original songs in one of several events planned for upcoming months in celebration of Jackson County Community Theatre’s 50th anniversary, including Brown County’s own John Whitcomb.

Whitcomb graduated from the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, California and headed to Nashville, Tennessee, where he began performing with an established group. This led to the opportunity to open for Nashville veterans such as Vince Gill and Chet Atkins.

Whitcomb’s songwriting ear was teased again by employment he found in the pit orchestra at the American Cabaret Theatre in Indianapolis. It was the music from “Shuffle Along” that really caught his ear. Musician Eubie Blake and lyricist Noble Sissle’s music had a lasting impact on his writing style, as can be heard on his latest album, “Arabelle.”

His most recent project is setting the lyrics of his distant relative, poet James Whitcomb Riley, to music.

A limited number of tickets are on sale now at Artistic Impressions custom frame shop in downtown Seymour, at Family Drug in Brownstown and online at jcct.org. All seats are just $10. Beer and wine will be available at this event, along with JCCT’s usual concessions, including popcorn, candy and soft drinks.

Local art and craft show seeking artists

A juried fine art and fine craft show that will take place on Thanksgiving weekend is now accepting applications from artists and crafters.

The Seasons Holiday Art and Craft Show has been a Brown County tradition at The Seasons Lodge and Conference Center, 560 State Road 46, for nearly 40 years. This year, the show will take place Friday and Saturday, Nov. 29 and 30.

The show offers cash awards for the best two-dimensional and three-dimensional work, as well as a people’s choice award selected by guests’ ballots.

Art guild raffling off pastel painting

The Brown County Art Guild, 48 S. Van Buren St., has begun its annual raffle. Visitors can stop by the guild or go online to purchase a ticket for a chance to win “Crimson Spring,” a pastel work donated by guild member Pamela Newell.

The website is bcartguildshop.com/raffle. One ticket is $25, or get three for $50 or six for $100. Money will be put toward the preservation of the Guild’s historic collection, promotion of its award-winning artist members and the offering of workshops and programs throughout the year.

The drawing will take place Saturday, Nov. 23 at the guild. The winner does not need to be present to win.

Teen center offering adult music classes

The BETA Center, 175 S. Jefferson St., is offering classes for adult students throughout the 2019-2020 school year.

Professional guitarist Jeff Foster will offer private lessons for adult students on Monday evenings between 3 and 8 p.m. The cost is $25 for 30 minutes or $50 per hour. Foster has produced several albums and is nationally well-known acoustic guitarist. He also has been a guitar instructor for the After School Arts Committee.

Shared art studio space available in town

B3 Gallery has created a space for artists and the community to come together.

S3, the Nashville “shared studio and maker space” is on the second floor of the gallery at 61 W. Main St. It is a meeting area for artists, craftspeople, inventors, clubs, seminars, classes or individuals.

S3 can provide painting and drawing easels; an alternative process darkroom; macro photography equipment; a digital projector; a glass annealing kiln and burnout kiln; PCB etching equipment and tanks; leaded glass tools; metal forming and casting tools; electronics and robotics fabrication tools; various computer numerical control tools; a scroll saw; band saw; drill press; centrifuge; bench grinder/polisher; laser cutter/engraver; air compressor; vacuum pumps; and chemistry vent hood.

The organizers seek “fun, energetic, enthusiastic and creative people to bring life to the space.”
