BELMONT — A Nashville man was flown from the scene of a three-vehicle crash on State Road 46 West Nov. 20, causing the road to be shut down.

The crash was reported just after 5 p.m. near Hickory Hill Drive, which is near Yellowwood Road.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Nicholson Briles responded to the crash alongside deputies Chad Williams, Jacob Gibson and Nashville Police Officer Cody Poynter, according to Briles’ accident report.

Briles reported seeing a silver van with heavy front end damage facing east on the road, a blue pickup truck with heavy rear end damage facing south, and a motorcycle lying on its side directly east of the truck. Briles noted the van was partially in the other lane of traffic.

The motorcycle driver, 50-year-old Eric Ernsberger of Hickory Hill Drive, was on the ground being treated by a bystander when police arrived. Ernsberger said he was stopped on 46 West turning left onto Hickory Hill Drive when he was struck from behind and thrown from his bike. He was on the ground lying next to the wreck when a bystander stopped to help him off the road and tend to his injuries, the accident report states.

While Briles was speaking with Ernsberger, EMS arrived and he became complaining of lower back pain. He was later transported to Indiana University Methodist Hospital by a medical helicopter, the report states.

A witness to the crash told police he was following behind the van when he reported seeing the van rear-end the truck in front of him. At this point, the witness pulled over to make sure everyone was OK, according to the report.

The driver of the truck that was rear ended, 63-year-old Kevin Wright of Nashville, said he was driving east on 46 West when the motorcycle had stopped to turn left in front of him. He then began to slow down, and as he was coming to a stop Wright said he remembered feeling an impact behind him.

His airbags deployed at that time. He said he was worried about going over a nearby guardrail because his truck had gone into the air after being struck. His truck went off the south side of the road and came to rest facing south.

After exiting his truck, it began smoking, so Wright said he kept his distance from the crash.

Dana Fielding, 63, also of Nashville, was driving the van and she told police she didn’t notice brake lights in front of her or the truck slowing down, according to the report.

Fielding said she couldn’t remember what she was doing at the time of the crash, but that the next thing she knew she had hit the truck. During the crash, her van entered in the westbound lane of traffic.

Fielding told police she was driving between 45 and 50 MPH when the crash happened.

Neither Fielding nor Wright were injured in the crash and refused treatment at the scene by EMS.

All three vehicles were towed due to disabling damage.

The driver of the van and of the truck were both wearing their seat belts.

It was marked “unknown” in the report if Ernsberger had been wearing a helmet when he was ejected from his motorcycle.
