Winter experience at distillery this weekend

Hard Truth Hills, 418 Old State Road 46, will host the Frosty Trails Festival on Saturday, Jan. 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This winter wellness experience will focus on moving, living well and having some winter fun in Brown County.

All are welcome to enjoy a full slate of winter activities, including a 5K extreme trail run, heated yoga on the “back 40” of Hard Truth Hills’ property, a Pirate Rum Run Fun Run, sledding, a Mindfulness and Mixology Apothecary’s Tent, sports and wellness vendors, food, drinks and more.

Participants can choose from two ticket options:

  • Frost & Fortitude ($35, ages 16+): includes 5K run registration, runner’s swag bag, festival grounds entry and access to included activities, festival door prize entry, meal and drink vouchers for select warm mocktails and cocktails
  • Frosty Fun ($15, all ages): includes festival grounds entry and access to included activities, festival door prize entry
  • Children ages 12 and younger receive free festival entry.

With either package, guests 21 and older can also register for the Pirate Rum Run Fun Run for an additional $10. The fun run is one mile, three laps around the Hard Truth Hills pond, and includes four shots of warm Hard Truth Toasted Coconut Rum as participants make the rounds.

The extreme 5K trail race will take runners on a tour through the hilly terrain of Brown County. Runners will face several steep hills, creek crossings and all of the other fun things that come with getting out into nature.

Take Tai Chi at the library for free

All are welcome to participate in a free introduction to Tai Chi at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane, on Saturday, Jan. 18 from 10 a.m. to noon. Marc Marshall will guide the class.

Orienteering race to take place at Yellowwood

YELLOWWOOD — The annual Purdue Outing Club Adventure Race (POCAR) is coming to Yellowwood State Forest, 772 Yellowwood Lake Road, Saturday through Monday, Jan. 18 through 20.

The POCAR is a 48-hour orienteering race for teams of four to six. The course ranges from 20 to 40 miles, but teams should be prepared to cover 50 miles on foot.

Local fitness studio to host several classes, events

Simply Fitness, 47 E. Main St., will host a variety of regular fitness sessions and special workshops through the winter.

  • Yoga and Acupuncture for Raynaud’s, Jan. 30 — Erica Weddle of Simply Fitness and Leah Craig of Roots of Healing Acupuncture will provide an evening of gentle yoga and acupuncture. Craig will place needles in particular points on the body to open up channels while Weddle will guide participants through an accessible yoga sequence. Limited to eight, $25 to $45, Simply Fitness studio.
  • Wellness Retreat at Story Inn, April 2-5 — Simply Fitness and DNK Presents host a weekend of yoga, dining, hiking, wine tasting and relaxation at the Story Inn, 6404 State Road 135 South, $550 to $750, tickets include all classes, one bodywork session of choice, food, beverages and the option to add overnight accommodations.
  • Slow Flow Yoga, Mondays, 6 to 7 p.m. — Simply Fitness studio, $13.
  • Yin Yoga, Wednesdays, 6 to 7 p.m. — Tap into the meridian lines, targeting connective tissues, the bones, muscles and ligaments, Simply Fitness studio, $13.
  • Restorative Yoga, Wednesdays, 7 to 8 p.m. — Use props to support the body and allow gentle relaxation, for anyone who leads a stressful life, or is looking for rest and relaxation, Simply Fitness studio, $13.

Hours extended, fees waived for new Y members

The Brown County Community YMCA has extended its hours, effective Monday, Jan. 13 for the fitness center, gym, multipurpose room and locker rooms.

  • Mondays: 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Tuesdays: 4 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Wednesdays: 4 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Thursdays: 4 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Fridays: 4 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Saturdays: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Sundays: Noon to 9 p.m.

Register for a YMCA membership by Jan. 15 and the joiner fee will be waived for new members.

Members have access to the aquatics and fitness centers and gymnasium, and receive discounts on all classes and programs.

Kyokushin karate training offered

Sensei David Michaelis is offering training in traditional kyokushin karate.

Classes are for students 16 and older twice a week, at 6 p.m. Thursdays and 4 p.m. Sundays.

Michaelis has trained and taught kyokushin karate for more than 35 years. Kyokushin, Japanese for “the society of the ultimate truth,” is a style of stand-up, full-contact karate. It is intended to foster humility, perseverance and nonviolence and to provide a foundation for improving physical and mental discipline.
