Motorcycle driver involved in crash faces charges

BEAN BLOSSOM — Charges have been filed against a 39-year-old Brown County man because police say he was intoxicated when he crashed his motorcycle last summer.

The crash was reported at 5:45 p.m. June 28 at the intersection of Gatesville and Bittersweet roads. Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Nicholson Briles reported seeing Carl Johnson lying in the westbound lane with his motorcycle just west of him, according to a probable cause affidavit.

It appeared that the motorcycle had crashed into the guardrail on the north side of the road, Briles reported. Johnson was wearing a helmet; his eyes were red and watery, the officer wrote. Johnson told officers he was coming from the IGA in Bean Blossom. There was no longer an IGA in Bean Blossom.

Briles reported that Johnson was not answering questions correctly. When EMS placed him on a cot to take him to Johnson Memorial Health Hospital, Briles reported smelling alcohol on him.

A search warrant was granted for Johnson’s blood to get his blood-alcohol content because Johnson was not being coherent enough to consent, the affidavit said. EMS took him to the hospital. His motorcycle was towed.

At the hospital, Johnson told the officer had had drunk two or three vodka drinks about a half-hour before he drove, the affidavit said. A nurse told Briles that Johnson’s blood-alcohol content when he arrived was 0.25, more than three times the legal limit. The blood test was forward to the Indiana State Department of Toxicology.

On Jan. 22, three misdemeanor charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated were filed against Johnson.

Man checked out by EMS after crash

A 31-year-old Bloomington man was checked out by EMS after a collision at the State Road 46/Van Buren Street intersection on Jan. 23.

Christopher Lole was attempting to turn onto 46 East from Van Buren when his vehicle was hit from behind by a vehicle driven by Holly Hudson, 25, of Springville, an accident report by Nashville Police Officer William Pruitt states.

Pruitt wrote that Hudson did not realize Lole’s vehicle had not yet turned, and it was too late for her stop before striking it.

Hudson told Pruitt she was not injured, but Lole complained of neck pain and was checked out by EMS. He was not taken to a hospital.

It was marked “unknown” in the report if either driver was wearing a seat belt.
