Local adventure company giving away trips

Local outdoor adventure company DNK Presents has opened nominations for the fifth annual Women’s Adventure Giveaway. This year’s adventure trip will be at Mulberry Gap Mountain Bike Getaway in Ellijay, Georgia.

Four women will win a free, four-day, custom backcountry adventure. DNK Presents owners, Danielle and Kate Nolan, will guide the trip, taking place the weekend of May 14 to 17.

Each winner also will receives a prize package of exclusive outdoor gear from national and local sponsors.

Dance workshops, new classes at YMCA

The Brown County YMCA’s new session of classes began Monday, Feb. 17 and will run through April 5. There will be no classes March 17-21 due to spring break.

The new session will include an all-ages dance workshop instructed by the ballet department from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, a “Lunch Time, Crunch Time” fitness class, and new tumbling classes.

The Y will host the free dance workshops on Saturday, Feb. 29 from 2 to 3 p.m. Classes will include a 30-minute creative movement session for kids younger than 6; an hourlong introduction to ballet for kids ages 7+ and adults; and a 30-minute, chair-based creative movement class for seniors and others with movement limitations.

On Saturday, Feb. 29, participants will be part of a performance with dancers from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music ballet department after class. That performance, at 4:30 p.m. at the Brown County High School auditorium, will be free and open to the public.

The Y also has added toddler tumbling classes and expanded the current class offerings to Wednesday nights.

Fitness studio to host several classes, events

Simply Fitness, 47 E. Main St., will host a variety of fitness sessions and special workshops through the winter.

  • Gua Sha and Yoga, March 3 — Gua Sha aims to move stagnant energy, known as “chi,” or our blood flow through the body. The treatment involves a tool to rub the skin in long strokes, applying pressure. Simply Fitness studio, $25, 6 to 7 p.m., limited to six participants.
  • Wellness Retreat at Story Inn, April 2-5 — Simply Fitness and DNK Presents host a weekend of yoga, dining, hiking, wine tasting and relaxation at the Story Inn, 6404 State Road 135 South, $550 to $750, includes all classes, one bodywork session of choice, food, beverages and the option to add overnight accommodations.
  • Lunchtime Yoga, Feb. 19 and 26 — Grey Low, a registered yoga teacher, will hold space for meditation, utilizing the same punch-card system as the Tuesday/Thursday lunchtime yoga, 12:15 to 12:45 p.m., $5 per class, $20 for punch card.
  • Slow Flow Yoga, Mondays, 6 to 7 p.m. — Simply Fitness studio, $13.
  • Lunchtime Yoga with Erica, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. — Simply Fitness studio, $5 per class, $20 for punch card.
  • Yin Yoga, Wednesdays, 6 to 7 p.m. — Tap into the meridian lines, targeting connective tissues, the bones, muscles and ligaments, Simply Fitness studio, $13.
  • Restorative Yoga, Wednesdays, 7 to 8 p.m. — Use props to support the body and allow gentle relaxation, Simply Fitness studio, $13.

Kyokushin karate training offered

Sensei David Michaelis is offering training in traditional kyokushin karate.

Classes are for students 16 and older twice a week, at 6 p.m. Thursdays and 4 p.m. Sundays.

Michaelis has trained and taught kyokushin karate for more than 35 years. Kyokushin, Japanese for “the society of the ultimate truth,” is a style of stand-up, full-contact karate. It is intended to foster humility, perseverance and nonviolence and to provide a foundation for improving physical and mental discipline.
