Bridge work coming to 46 East this month

Drivers will notice some restrictions on their way to and from Columbus on State Road 46 East starting this month.

The bridge over North Fork Salt Creek, just east of Parkview Road, will be reduced to one lane with a temporary traffic signal beginning Monday, March 16, weather permitting, said Natalie Garrett, media relations director for the Indiana Department of Transportation Seymour district.

Duncan Robertson Inc. will replace the bridge deck and widen it. The one-lane signal is expected to be in place until early August, Garrett said.

The state is paying $1.1 million for this project.

The contract also includes a bridge deck overlay on the Sgt. Jeremy McQueary bridge on 46 East bridge that’s west of Parkview Road. That work will begin after the competition of the deck replacement and widening project on the other bridge, Garrett said.

The cost to the state for that overlay is $317,000 using the same contractor. The contract completion date is Aug. 28.

At the March 4 Brown County Commissioners meeting, Brown County Highway Superintendent Mike Magner said signs were going up on 46 East announcing the project.

No timeline yet for downtown stoplight

The Indiana Department of Transportation continues to work with a contractor to replace the stoplight at the intersection of Van Buren and Main streets in downtown Nashville.

Traffic on State Road 135 continues to flow through a four-way stop after a driver badly damaged the pole that held Nashville’s downtown stoplight in December.

INDOT is working with Midwestern Electric to receive cost estimates, said INDOT Seymour district Media Relations Director Natalie Garrett.

“Midwestern will replace the foundation of the signal pole that was struck, replace the pole and then get the signal back online,” she said in an email last week.

“We currently don’t have a timeline for the repair, but it is a priority project for us and work will begin as soon as possible.”

An Indianapolis man was charged last month with Level 6 felony for purposely driving into the traffic light pole.
