Brown County band students earn awards

Brown County High School band program brought home several awards from the Indiana State School Music Association:

  • Percussion ensemble, gold
  • John Oliver: snare drum, silver; drum set, gold
  • Francesca Mata: clarinet, gold
  • Katianna Richardson: flute, silver
  • Elizabeth Lowe: flute, silver
  • Mackenzie Crum: tenor sax, silver
  • Nicole Prosch: alto sax, gold
  • Jacob Rodgers: baritone sax, gold
  • Saxophone quartet, gold
  • Neo Zhang: euphonium, gold
  • Emma Beck: horn, gold
  • Ainslie Winton: horn, gold

Brown County Junior High School band students also earned awards:

  • Oliver Tedford: alto sax, gold
  • Trevor Shields: flute, gold
  • Abcde Santos: clarinet, gold
  • Brooklyn Hochstetler: alto sax, gold
  • Ely Wesley: clarinet, gold

The following high school students and ensembles also earned bids to perform at the State Solo and Ensemble at North Central High School in Columbus on Feb. 29:

  • Neo Zhang, Emma Beck, Francesca Mata, John Oliver, Jacob Rodgers and Nicole Prosch; and
  • A saxophone quartet of Nicole Prosch (alto sax), Jacob Rodgers (baritone sax), Caleb Doss (alto sax) and Mackenzie Crum (tenor sax).

These students are headed to state because their pieces were under the category Group I, which is considered the hardest category of music for solo and ensemble.

National History Day state qualifiers

FRANKLIN — Several Brown County students are advancing to the state level in the Indiana Historical Society’s National History Day in Indiana contest after a successful South region showing at Franklin College on Feb. 29. The contest included students from Bartholomew, Brown, Hancock, Johnson, Marion, Monroe and Shelby counties.

Brown County winners were:

Kendra Earnshaw, Brown County Intermediate School, individual performance (“Shirley Chisolm: Unbought and Unbossed”)

Ella Jackson, Brown County Junior High School, individual exhibit (“Breaking Codes and Breaking Barriers: Battle of Midway”)

Alanya Jacobus, BCIS, individual exhibit (“Gus Grissom: A Space Leader”)

Chloee Robison, Brown County High School, individual exhibit (“The Thalidomide Tragedy: Breaking Barriers in Politics and the Placenta”)

Mattie Satter, BCHS, individual exhibit (“Breaking Barriers for Women in Agriculture”)

Wesley Arndt and Kai Koester, BCJHS, group exhibit (“The First Immigrants to be Banned: Chinese Exclusion Act”)

Approximately 65 students took part in the regional contest. The NHDI State Contest will take place Saturday, April 25 at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, the Indiana State Government Center Convention Center and the Indiana State Library.

NHDI is a yearlong program dedicated to enhancing history education in Indiana’s schools. Students in Grades 4 through 12 explore a historical subject that fits under the annual theme. This year’s theme is “Breaking Barriers in History.” Students use their research to work individually or in a group to create a documentary, exhibit, paper (individual only), performance or website.
