New bookstore to open as soon as it is safe

Across the country, doors to small businesses are closed, owners awaiting a day when they can reopen. When that day comes, one store will be saying “hello” to customers for the first time.

Naughty Dog Books, in the Heritage Mall on Van Buren Street, will celebrate a grand opening as soon as possible, but for now, the store has a Facebook page, facebook.com/NDBindiana.

Mother and daughter duo, Tarin Paradise and Shelby Roth, had always talked about a “one day” when they would open a cozy book shop. Last fall, they had the conversation again. Roth said God opened the doors for the dream to become a reality.

An attorney, Roth had worked in law for a number of years until she took some time to stay home and raise two children. Paradise is a former English teacher who instilled a love of reading in her daughter.

“For as long as I could remember, she was taking me to book sales with a book bag,” Roth said.

Not only are they book lovers, but they also share a love of dogs, too, hence, the shop’s unique name. In testing out names for the shop, they realized that their own pets shared a naughtiness. Thus, Naughty Dog Books was born.

The store will feature a broad collection of genres, including popular fiction, bestsellers, nonfiction, mystery, faith and family, memoirs and more. They will also carry bookish gifts like T-shirts, candles and mugs.

The space also will allow for small gatherings to take place, and the owners plan to host three different monthly book clubs: Mystery, thriller and crime; faith and family; and popular fiction and best-seller.

With things up in the air right now, their grand opening is set for Memorial Day weekend, but it is subject to change. “We’re ready to open whenever the state and everyone gives us the all clear,” Roth said. Shop hours will likely be Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The shop will be closed on Sundays.

They were a bit worried, opening the shop in such an uncertain time, but they believe they are filling a need. They plan on being both a tourist destination and a staple for Brown County locale.

Roth said she and her mother are putting their creative juices together. They look forward to opening their doors to their community and sharing their love of literature locals and tourists alike.
