Edward LeRoy Schoff, 88, of Carmel, IN, passed away May 7, 2020. He was born December 10, 1931 in LaPorte, IN, son of Lester and Verma (Short) Schoff.
After serving in the US Air Force during the Korean conflict, Ed graduated from Purdue University with a master’s degree in Education. He had a passion and was dedicated to teaching. He exemplified this in his everyday life as well as professionally.
While teaching in the Lafayette School Corporation, Ed was known as the favorite Biology teacher because he was loved by all his students.
Another life interest was involvement in the Boy Scouts, where Ed served as Scoutmaster and was recognized for his achievements. He enjoyed taking the scouts on back packing trips, canoeing and always made sure they learned from the great outdoors.
The gift of teaching was also ensuring that his own children experienced important life values. During summer vacations, they were fortunate to travel extensively, visiting 48 mainland states. Ed had many interests and hobbies including woodworking, archery, horseshoes, fishing, hunting and endless other pleasures that he shared with his children. He was supportive of each child’s endeavor, whether it was speech, scouts, swimming, gymnastics or any other. He continued with devotion, teaching his grandchildren, whom he adored. He taught them how to hunt, fish, water ski and numerous other life skills. His legacy is the example of being the ultimate husband, father, and grandfather.
Ed was known to love square dancing. He served as president of Bucks and Does Square Dance Club for more than 9 years. Other memberships included the Toastmasters of Lafayette, Boy Scouts Troop 322 and the Cottonwood Christian Church.
Following retirement, Ed built a beautiful house on Lake Lemon where he and Romelle lived more than 23 years enjoying the quiet life on the lake.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his brother, Fred Schoff.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Romelle (Cesal) Schoff; children, Dennis Schoff (Nina Sorensen), Dianne Schoff Powers (Drew) and Donna Schoff Varda (Jim); thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Due to the current pandemic regulations, a Celebration of Life Service will be scheduled for a later date.
A private burial will take place in Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Madison, IN.
