BREAKING: July 4 fireworks canceled in Nashville

No pre-show tailgate at the IGA. No hot dogs and sparklers at the football field at dusk. The virus has taken another summer event off the calendar, as the Brown County Lions Club announced this morning that it’s canceling its July 4 fireworks show.

“The Brown County Lions Club has regrettably cancelled the July 4 fireworks for 2020 because of the pandemic, stating it would be irresponsible of them to ignore the social-distancing requirement we are under,” the club reported in a press release. “They are thankful for the support of the community and local businesses in the past and look forward to returning to an even bigger display in 2021.”

Cordry-Sweetwater leaders are meeting this evening to decide what to do about the lakes community’s fireworks.

According to Gov. Eric Holcomb’s Back On Track Indiana reopening plan, the state should be under no virus-related restrictions by July 4 — if communities reach or maintain several benchmarks. Those data points include seeing the number of hospitalized patients decline for 14 days; the state retaining its surge capacity for hospital beds and ventilators; being able to test all Hoosiers who need to be tested; and being able to contact-trace all people who have tested positive for the virus. If any of those conditions are not met, the governor has said he would alter the timeline.

Cook Medical announced earlier this month that Bloomington’s BTown Boom fireworks show on July 2 had been canceled, and the City of Bloomington canceled that community’s July 4 parade.
