COUNTY NEWS: Contractor for Deer Run Park roof project approved; gas tax collection declines

Parks and rec board approves contractor for roof project

The Brown County Parks and Recreation Board approved hiring a contractor in May to put a new roof on the restrooms and the shelterhouse at Deer Run Park.

The board unanimously approved hiring Robertson Construction to do the work for $8,200, which will come out of the department’s non-reverting fund.

At the May 27 meeting, parks and recreation Director Mark Shields told the board that renovations of the restrooms at the park were completed earlier this year by the maintenance supervisor. Renovations included new sinks, replacing plumbing fixtures, new faucets, toilet paper and soap dispensers.

The only remaining renovation was the roof, which Shields said he had received three bids to do, with Robertson Construction coming in with the lowest bid.

The new roof will be metal and the board voted that the color be green.

Shields said that Robertson Construction said they could start in the next couple of weeks once the metal for the roofs was in.

At that meeting, the board also decided to wait to open the restrooms to the public because of the pandemic.

County’s gas tax collection down 18 percent

Brown County Highway Superintendent Mike Magner reported at the June 3 Brown County Commissioners meeting that the county’s gas tax was down 18 percent for May compared to last year.

Magner said when he received the department’s check for motor vehicle highway and local road and street funding, he noticed the downturn, “because of people driving less, not working and paying less gas tax,” he said.

June and July amounts are still unknown, but Magner said the hope is that travel will pick back up soon and bring in more gas tax.

Some of the money to pave and maintain county roads comes from gas and excise taxes through the state. The remaining money comes from the state grant program called Community Crossings and from the wheel tax you pay when you register vehicles in Brown County.
