SCHOOL NEWS: School board approves donations, staff changes

The Brown County Schools Board of Trustees approved the following items at the May 21 board meeting:

  • Retirement notices for Mary George and Vicki Heldman, effective at the conclusion of this school year.
  • Elementary school, Brown County Intermediate School, Brown County Junior High School and Brown County High School handbooks for the 2020-2021 school year.
  • Donations in support of the Governor’s Work Ethic Certificate program: $500 from the Cummins Foundation Inc; $200 from Designscape; $200 from Creekside Retreat.
  • Modification for Paige Wetzel, Helmsburg Elementary School counselor, from working five days per week to three days per week, without benefits, at Sprunica Elementary School only, effective at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year.
  • Modification for Wendi Gore, BCIS counselor, from working three days per week to four days per week with benefits, effective at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year.
  • Modification for Sarah Bosk, Van Buren Elementary School counselor, from working two days per week with no benefits to four days per week with benefits at VBE and HES, effective at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year. She is a replacement for Paige Wetzel who requested the decrease in hours and to work at SES only, Superintendent Laura Hammack said.
  • Separating BCHS girls varsity basketball coach Matt Roberts, effective May 4. This was not a termination. Roberts was appointed as BCHS boys varsity basketball coach, Group 1 at $6,206 stipend, effective Aug. 5, to replace John Berning.
  • Separating BCJHS eighth-grade girls basketball coach Emily Lewellen, effective May 12. This was not a termination. Lewellen was appointed as BCHS girls varsity basketball, Group 1 at $6,206 stipend, effective Aug. 5, to replace Matt Roberts.
  • Appointing VBE elementary teacher Jill LaGiglia, master’s degree, Level E at $49,000, with 11 years of experience, full-time with benefits, effective Aug. 3. She is a replacement for Jayne Jones.
  • Appointing VBE elementary teacher Kortney Thalls, bachelor’s degree, Level A at $38,000, with zero years of experience, full-time with benefits, effective Aug. 3. She is a replacement for Debbie Olson.
  • Appointing BCIS art teacher Dawn Faust, master’s degree, Level B at 12,304.68 with seven years of experience, two hours a day, 184 days per year, no benefits, effective Aug. 3. This is a new position.
  • Appointing HES preschool paraprofessional Carlie Salisbury, $11 per hour, four days per week, 7.25 hours per day, part-time with no benefits. She is a replacement for Vicki Heldman.
  • Appointing VBE elementary teacher Piper Nicholson, Level A at $38,000, with zero years of experience, full time with benefits, effective Aug. 3. She is a replacement for Cynthia Baughman.
  • Appointing BCIS fifth-grade girls volleyball coach Kortney Thalls, Group 14 at $993 stipend, effective Aug. 5. She is a replacement for Alysha Oxendine.
  • Transferring BCHS teacher Julie Miller to BCJHS teacher, effective Aug. 3. She is a replacement for Sarah Cochran.
  • Transferring HES paraprofessional Libby Zeigler to SES paraprofessional, effective Aug. 3. She is a replacement for Dana Figg.
  • Transferring BCIS paraprofessional Samantha Prather to BCIS preschool teacher, full-time with benefits, $15.75 per hour, effective Aug. 3. This is a new position.
