Fire started by lightning damages home

A home on Ridgeway Drive was damaged by fire last night after a strong storm swept through the area.

Brown County (Nashville) Volunteer Fire Department Chief Nick Kelp said that firefighters were initially called to a woods fire started by a lightning strike behind the home. The call came into dispatch just after 8:30 p.m. and the first firefighters arrived about 20 minutes later.

“First truck on scene thought they smelled something electrical from the house, so they went around to the back and discovered a fire in the walk-out basement of the home,” Kelp said.

Other firefighters were called from Fruitdale and from Hamblen and Jackson townships. Firefighters were able to keep the fire contained to the one room in the basement, Kelp said.

“That room is pretty much all gone, but the rest of the house and its contents are saved,” he said.

The Red Cross helped the family for the evening, he said.

Firefighters did not leave the scene until after midnight, according to the dispatch log.

One firefighter was injured on the scene by pulling an abdominal muscle and was taken to a hospital. That firefighter will likely be out of service for a few weeks, Kelp said.
