Susabel “Susie” Poling

Susabel "Susie" Poling

Susabel “Susie” Poling passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family members and her beloved dog, Hayley, on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020.
Born July 5, 1930 to Earl and Grace L. Barkes Bond in Brown County near Bean Blossom. Susie was active in 4-H and as a teenager she became the Brown County 4-H Queen. In the 1950’s she was the owner and manager of ‘Sue’s Market’ in Brown County. Later she worked for IPS in the school cafeteria where she eventually retired and became a full-time homemaker.
Susie was married to Harry E. Poling, Jr. (d. 2013) and together they had four children, Nancy Sue (Gary) Graham of Louisville, KY, Judy Irene (Sam) Wildman, Harry David (Judy Ann) Poling and Joseph Lee (Regina, d. 2013) Poling, all of Brown County, Indiana. They had six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
To know Susie, you know she loved children. She was a Sunday school teacher, planned vacation Bible school and facilitated a church camp. She was a ‘second mother’ or ‘adopted grandmother’ to many who still hold her in high esteem.
She passed on her love of nature, gardening, the art of canning homegrown food and 4H involvement to several generations.
Organized by her granddaughter, Mandy Johnloz, Susie had a team of caring and dedicated caregivers during the last years of her life. In addition to immediate family members, she was attended by Debbie Pedigo, Pricilla Jones, Missy Edds and great-granddaughters Taylor and Wylie Poling.
Due to current events of 2020, a private service will be held at the gravesite near her Brown County home on Monday, Aug. 31, 2020. She will be buried next to her husband in the Needmore Cemetery.
To honor the Indiana University department who provided many hours of therapy to Susie, the family is requesting in lieu of flowers, to send memorial donations to IU Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences 200 South Jordan Avenue, Bloomington, IN 47405. Enter “clinical services” in the memo.
