School board candidates join fall ballot

Five candidates for school board have signed on to vie for two seats on the November ballot.

Both are at-large seats, meaning that the people elected can live in any district. However, no more than two people from any district can be on the board at the same time, and there’s already one representative from each of the three districts on the board. That means that two people from the same district can’t win both at-large seats.

All voters in the county can vote for school board regardless of where they live.

The at-large candidates are:

DIST. 1: Marlene Barnett

DIST. 2: Stephanie Porter Kritzer

DIST. 3: Linda Hobbs, Lance L. Miller, Amy Huffman Oliver

In order to vote in the November election, you must be registered at the address where you currently live, unless your move was after the deadline to change your registration.

The Brown County Election Board advises all voters to check their registration status, as they may have been made “inactive” by mistake. To check your status or to register, visit indianavoters.in.gov.

Options being discussed for early voting

Brown County voters can vote by mail or vote early in person starting soon.

Voters planning to vote by mail can request an absentee ballot application now at indianavoters.in.gov. You will need to fill out the application and send it back before you receive your actual ballot in the mail, so leave plenty of time for those exchanges to happen.

The Brown County Election Board plans to meet on Tuesday, Sept. 1 to discuss in-person voting locations and a possible ballot drop box for those who want a contact-less voting experience.

In-person early voting will start 28 days before election day. Anyone can do this; you do not need a special reason to vote early in person.

General election day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Learn more about the local candidates

The League of Women Voters Brown County is partnering with the Brown County Democrat to print “Keys to the Candidates,” written answers to questions that were given to state and local candidates. That section is set to publish with the Sept. 30 paper.
