Letter: Consider what you’re voting for this fall

To the editor:

As you consider who you will vote for as President, I ask that you consider these issues as you make your choice.

The first and most immediate issue is the COVID-19 pandemic. This crisis continues to threaten the physical and financial health of our nation. We need a president who will provide leadership and responsibility in actively addressing this crisis. He must engage and follow the advice of the best medical experts available in order to manage the crisis as decisively and as quickly as possible. He must demonstrate leadership through his own behavior and model what we ask of our citizens.

The second issue is social justice and equity. We need a president who recognizes the injustice and inequities that exist in our society, one who will dedicate his efforts to foster inclusion and understanding in the pursuit of solutions. We need leadership that will heal the divisions and rededicate our nation to the principle that all people are created equal and to the goals of liberty and justice for all.

The third issue is climate change. Our next president must provide global leadership in addressing this global threat to life on our planet. The problems of disease and inequity are being multiplied by global warming. The scale and complexity of this problem is matched only by what is at stake. This is an existential issue for human kind and requires leadership that can enlist the ideas and efforts of people, organizations and governments around the world.

The final issue is one of character. As a parent and grandparent, I want a president who demonstrates the values I have worked to instill in our children.

For me, these issues are clear, and so is my choice.
