Man killed in multi-vehicle crash on State Road 46 East

One person was killed and another was transported by a medical helicopter following a crash involving multiple vehicles on State Road 46 East yesterday afternoon.

Wendell Bailey was pronounced deceased at the scene despite lifesaving efforts by emergency personnel, the release states.

Wendell Baily is the father of former Indiana University star basketball player Damon Bailey, the Brown County Sheriff’s Department confirmed this morning.

The crash was reported just before 3 p.m. in the 3600 block of State Road 46 East.

According to a press release from the sheriff’s department, Jacob Waltermire was driving a 2005 Nissan Altima when he tried to pass a tractor trailer, but noticed an oncoming motorcycle.

Waltermire then stopped trying to pass and returned his vehicle behind the tractor trailer before over correcting then losing control of his vehicle.

His vehicle crossed the center line and struck a 2012 Hyundai Elantra driven by Hana Cai.

Cai had been driving behind the motorcycle and was unable to avoid colliding with Waltermire, the press release states.

A 1990 Honda GL1500SE motorcycle driven by Wendell Bailey was also involved in the crash, but the release states that at this time it is unclear how the motorcycle was involved in the crash.

Wendell Bailey was pronounced deceased at the scene despite lifesaving efforts by emergency personnel, the release states.

Wendell Bailey’s passenger, Beverly Bailey, was transported by a medical helicopter to a nearby hospital for further treatment due to the extent of her injuries.

No other injuries were reported in the crash.

Waltermire was taken to Columbus Regional Health Hospital for a blood draw as part of the standard procedure for fatality crashes, the release states.

The accident remains under investigation.

Indiana State Police, Columbus Regional Hospital EMS, Brown County (Nashville) Volunteer Fire Department, Southern Brown Volunteer Fire Department and Hamblen Township Volunteer Fire Department also assisted at the scene.
