Multiple motorcycle crashes reported over weekend

Police and first responders responded to three separate crashes involving motorcycles over the weekend.

The first was reported on State Road 135 North near Grandma Barnes Road on Friday, Oct. 9 just before 2:30 p.m.

Jack Simpson, 61, of Fishers, was driving north when he went off the road after hitting a patch of gravel, according to an accident report by Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Austin Schonfeld.

Simpson said he had side and chest pain. Schonfeld also stated that Simpson had a number of open wounds.

Based on the skid marks on the road, it appeared Simpson laid his motorcycle down prior to going off the road, Schonfeld’s report said.

Simpson was taken to a hospital by ambulance for further treatment. His motorcycle was towed. He was wearing a helmet.

Less than 24 hours later, on Saturday, Oct. 10, police were dispatched to the 2800 block of Clay Lick Road for another motorcycle crash involving injuries just after 1 p.m.

The driver, 54-year-old David Reidy of Urbana, Illinois, was driving south when his motorcycle traveled too close to the edge of the road causing the bike to be “sucked” from the side of the road, Deputy William Pool reported.

The motorcycle’s front tire became lodged in dirt, causing the back end to flip up and throw the riders off.

Reidy’s passenger, 52-year-old Nancy Reidy of Urbana, had a cut above her eye and minor bleeding. She was taken to a hospital. David Reidy was able to drive the motorcycle from the scene.

The couple was not wearing helmets, the report said.

Just after 6 p.m. that day, another motorcycle crash with minor injuries was reported near the Brown County State Park horseman’s campground entrance on State Road 135 South.

The driver, 53-year-old Brian Burgin of Trafalgar, told police he was traveling north when the front tire of his motorcycle fell off the side of the road where a fog line was on the edge of the pavement, according to an accident report by Sgt. Colton Magner.

Magner reported that the area where the motorcycle left the road did have a section of fog line that was on the edge of the pavement.

Burgin told police that after his front tire left the road, he was unable to bring it back onto the road and his motorcycle went down a steep embankment.

Burgin reported having pain in both wrists. He also had an earring ripped out during the crash, causing his ear to bleed. He had scratches on his neck near that ear, according to the report.

He was treated at the scene. His motorcycle was towed. He was not wearing a helmet, the report said.
