Fall property tax bills coming due soon

Property tax bills are due on Tuesday, Nov. 10, and payment will be collected the same way as it was in May — with the addition of a drop box option.

Brown County Treasurer Mary Smith is asking taxpayers to make their payments via an outside drop box, by mail, the internet or over the phone, as offices in the County Office Building remain closed to non-essential business due to the pandemic. The treasurer’s office is handling most questions over the phone, and in-person in the Salmon Room for “special issues only,” a notice from Smith states.

The drop box is outside the County Office Building to the right of the glass doors at the lower parking lot entrance. Envelopes are also available there. If anyone wants a receipt, they are asked to include a self-addressed stamped envelope. If not, the cleared check will be the receipt, the notice states.

Anyone with questions can call 812-988-5458.

The mailing address is P.O. Box 98, Nashville, IN 47448.

Tax payments also can be made over the phone by calling 866-480-8552. The property number and the amount to pay will be required.

Payments can also be made online at www.invoicecloud.com/browncountyin. On the website, select “real estate” and not “personal property,” the notice states. The parcel number is not needed to use this site.

Another site taxpayers can use to make payments is www.paygov.us. Smith instructed taxpayers to select “Make a payment” in the top corner. This site does require the taxpayer to have the parcel number and the amount to pay on hand.

It’s not too late to apply for a ballot

If you’re still thinking you want to vote by mail but you haven’t actually applied for a ballot yet, there’s still time to do it — but not much.

The deadline to apply for a ballot by mail is midnight this Thursday, Oct. 22, if you apply online at indianavoters.in.gov. Voters also can apply in person at the Brown County clerk’s office in the courthouse, which closes at 4 p.m., or by emailing [email protected].

Not everyone is eligible to vote by mail this fall, but if you are over 65, you will be able to. For more allowable reasons to vote by mail, visit indianavoters.in.gov.
