Drug investigation leads to more charges filed

Charges have been filed against a local woman who was with a man being investigated in a drug case in June.

On June 13, Detective Paul Henderson pulled over a vehicle driven by Ryne Franks. The passenger, Ashley Barger, 22, Morgantown, was also interviewed and told police that she had recently used drugs, according to a police report.

Henderson reported finding digital scales in the car.

Barger gave consent for the use of a body scanner. She was taken to the Bartholomew County Jail where drugs were retrieved and placed into evidence by jail staff, the report said.

Police interviews revealed that the drugs belonged to Franks, the report said.

Barger was charged on Oct. 23 with possession of a narcotic drug, a Level 6 felony, and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

Franks also was arrested during that stop and was charged in June with possession of a narcotic drug exceeding 1 but less than 5 grams, and maintaining a common nuisance, both Level 6 felonies. He also was charged with possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

Man arrested for resisting law enforcement

A Morgantown man faces a Level 6 felony after police said he refused to comply with a traffic stop.

Deputies Austin Schonfeld and William Pool with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department tried to serve a warrant on North Shore Drive for James Thompson, 48, on Oct. 1.

Schonfeld recognized Thompson’s vehicle at the home. After waiting for nearly 20 minutes at the entrance of Woodland Lake, Schonfeld reportedly saw Thompson turn onto North Shore Drive from Woodland Lake Road, an incident narrative states. The deputies attempted to pull him over, but Thompson would not stop, the affidavit states.

According to the incident narrative, deputies utilized a “high-risk stop.” Thompson then stepped out of the vehicle. Officers told Thompson to place his hands up, but he reportedly began to approach officers. Officers advised him to put his hands up again and turn around and walk backward, which he did, the report said.

Thompson was arrested and taken to the Brown County jail. He was charged with resisting law enforcement on Oct. 7.

Failure to serve sentence results in felony charge

A local man has been charged with a Level 6 felony after failing to report to jail or a rehab center as part of his sentence.

On Aug. 25 Trenton Dilk, 27, was sentenced to serve 292 days in jail or report to a rehab center. As of Sept. 9, he had failed to do either, police said.

He was formally charged on Oct. 7.

Officer finds drugs at campsite

An Indianapolis man has been charged with misdemeanors for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia after an Indiana conservation officer visited his campsite.

On Aug. 21, Officer Brent Bohbrink talked with 19-year-old Kaiden Hardcastle, of Indianapolis, at a campsite. The location of the campsite was not noted in the probable cause affidavit.

Bohbrink reported seeing marijuana and paraphernalia in plain view at the site. Hardcastle said that the metal smoking pipe belonged to him, and told the officer he had 10 grams of marijuana in his tent.

Hardcastle was issued a summons for both charges. He was formally charged on Sept. 25.

Police: Woman struck victim with fist, bit face

Police say a 41-year-old Brown County woman struck another woman in the face with a closed fist before biting and scratching her face.

On Oct. 15, Amanda Hayworth was charged with battery, a Class B misdemeanor.

Brown County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Horn responded to a home on Oak Ridge Road on Aug. 23 for a disturbance. Before police arrived, the victim left the home and wanted to meet officers at another location.

She told police that she was visiting Hayworth’s home when argument began. When the victim told Hayworth to “shut up,” she reportedly jumped her and began striking her, the probable cause affidavit states.

A witness to the incident confirmed to police what happened. Horn reported seeing injuries on the victim and photographs were taken.
