Lilly Endowment scholarship finalists announced

Four high school seniors have been selected as finalists for the 2021 Brown County Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program.

They are Megan Bickley, Emelia Koester, John Oliver and Natalie Suding.

Brown County’s finalists were selected from among 12 applications submitted by students who live in Brown County and attend an accredited public high school. Applications for the 2021 scholarship were blindly reviewed and independently scored by members of the Brown County Community Foundation’s scholarship committee.

Phil McKown, BCCF board member and chairman of the scholarship committee, said the final interview was a great meeting. “What a kick to interview four really bright students,” he said. “This is my first year on the scholarship committee. Folks have said the in-person interviews were very revealing, and they certainly were.”

Finalists completed an impromptu essay and interview in October. Those were scored then and the four Lilly Scholar finalists were selected. The finalists’ rankings, along with the committee’s recommendations for scholarship nominees, have been submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana for final review.

The 2021 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar for Brown County will be named in December 2020.

Lilly Endowment Community Scholars are awarded four-year, full-tuition scholarships to pursue bachelor’s degrees at colleges or universities in Indiana. The scholarship also includes up to $900 annually for required textbooks and equipment.

Since the Lilly Endowment Scholarship Program’s inception in 1998, more than $424 million in scholarship tuition has been provided. Including scholars from the 23rd cohort, which started their college careers this fall, 4,769 students have received full-tuition Lilly scholarships.

The Lilly Scholarship program is administered by Independent Colleges of Indiana and community foundations in each of Indiana’s 92 counties.
