AUTHOR Q&A: Deanna Manzenberger, “The Sights You Love to See in Brown County”

Coloring books for adults are more popular than ever, so local graphic designer Deanna Manzenberger decided to create one focusing on Brown County.

The book, “The Sights You Love to See in Brown County,” is available at three places in town and on Manzenberger’s website.

She said it was difficult narrowing down the sites for the book because of all of the beauty and history Brown County has to offer.

“Everywhere you turn, you see something memorable. I wanted to include all of the well-known and highly public buildings around Nashville, the public art that everyone loves, popular venues, such as the art galleries, and lots and lots of nature,” she said.

“I took a lot of walks and drives, taking photos. Most off the pictures were drawn from the photos that I had taken.”

Because Manzenberger had many sites and images in mind, she was encouraged to break the coloring book up into volumes. She hopes to release her second book in 2021.

Q: What inspired you to write it?

A: The popularity of adult coloring books was evident. I noticed that most of the books were based around some theme. It occurred to me that there wasn’t one based on Brown County. I thought it would be a great souvenir for the tourists to take home and keep Brown County fresh in their minds, as well as simply being something that the locals would enjoy.

Q: What’s your day job?

A: I have a graphic design business, Brown County Design LLC. I do advertising and marketing, custom art and illustrations, and any other graphic design needs. I also offer a service called Brown County “Paint N Party,” which is a painting event that people can book for a private party. These are popular for bachelorette parties, birthdays or whatever, really.

Q: What are your connections to Brown County?

A: 2021 will mark my 30th year here in Brown County. I moved here after being offered a job and fell in love with the place, moving here soon after.

Q: How do you go about designing a coloring book like this?

A: … Often times, I would embellish with extra flowers and plants to create more areas to add color. I also included a few things that are gone now in an attempt to preserve the memories that I have of them — for instance, Bill Root’s carved limestone carousel horse that used to sit outside of the (Brown County) Art Gallery, as well as others that anyone who has lived or visited here for years will recognize. I started the coloring pages while I was still attending college. I was also working and raising my daughter. Basically, I used drawing the book as a way to wind down of an evening, sitting on my couch and watching TV. I look forward to the slower months of winter so that I can get the second book finished up.

Q: Where can people buy this book, and for how much?

A: The book can be purchased on my website www.browncountydesigncompany.com. It is also for sale at the Brown County Visitors Bureau, Fallen Leaf Books and the Abe Martin Lodge. The price varies by merchant, but is in the $10 to $12 range.
