Free legal aid phone clinic set for this week

Legal Aid will conduct a free legal service phone clinic on Tuesday, Dec. 7 for low-income residents of eight Indiana counties, including Brown County.

The clinic will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Callers can expect a 10-minute phone consultation where legal professionals will answer general questions and offer legal information.

Individuals seeking legal consultation must register by calling Legal Aid at 812-378-0358 on Tuesday, Dec. 7 between noon and 1:30 p.m. A volunteer attorney will return a call to registered individuals between 3 and 5:30 p.m.

Christmas tree lighting planned in Helmsburg

HELMSBURG — The Helmsburg community will be hosting a Christmas tree lighting ceremony behind the Helmsburg General Store on Friday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. All are welcome. Free hot chocolate will be served.

Christmas services scheduled at local church

St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1008 McLary Road, has made schedule changes for Christmas Masses. Services are as follows:

  • Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord, Thursday, Dec. 24, with a live vigil Mass at 3 p.m. at stagnescatholicnashville.org. There also will be a vigil Mass (no incense) at 5 p.m. and a vigil Mass at 7 p.m.
  • Christmas Day Mass, Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, Friday, Dec. 25 at 10 a.m.
  • New Year’s Eve Mass, Thursday, Dec. 31 at 5 p.m.
  • New Year’s Day Mass, Friday, Jan. 1, 2021 at 10 a.m.

There will be no children’s Mass or Midnight Mass this year.

By executive order of Governor Eric Holcomb, face masks are now mandatory throughout the State of Indiana, including places of worship. Everyone who comes to Mass or enters a building on the St. Agnes campus is required to wear a face mask that covers both nose and mouth.

Kids welcome at outdoor adventure series

The Purdue Extension Office, Sycamore Land Trust, the Brown County Soil and Water Conservation District and Brown County Parks and Rec are partnering for Brown County Youth Outdoor Adventure Series, which began Oct. 7.

The next outdoor adventure will include tree ID and survival skills at Trevlac Bluffs Nature Preserve on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 1 p.m.

Children in Grades 6 to 12 are welcome. The cost is $10 per student and equipment will be provided.

Complete YMCA family fitness challenge for prizes

The Brown County YMCA, 105 Willow St., is offering a Family Fun Fitness Challenge from Nov. 21 to Dec. 20.

Groups and families are welcome to complete challenges such as biking 3 miles in the state park, walking the Salt Creek Trail for at least 30 minutes, flossing every day for one week, taking a Thanksgiving Day walk and more.

One point is received per completed challenge. The grand prize is a three-month YMCA family membership. Participation prizes and goodie bags also will be awarded.

Library has secondhand books and more available

The Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane, has its Book Nook open, with a variety of used books, audio books, music on CD and DVDs for children, adults and teens.

All are welcome to browse the sidewalk carts near the entryway of the upper level of the library, or come inside and browse during library open hours: Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Money raised through the Book Nook and donations directly support the library’s programs and activities.

Local bluebird club selling nesting boxes

The Brown County Bluebird Club’s annual bluebird nest box sale is underway. Boxes are all cedar and fully assembled. One box is $15 and two boxes are $25. If interested, call Dan Sparks at 812-200-5700.
