Schools to be closed for second straight snow day

Due to road conditions, Brown County Schools students will be out of school again Tuesday, Feb. 2.

“Quite simply, the majority of the roads that our buses travel are not safe for passage,” Superintendent Laura Hammack told parents this afternoon. “Currently, the gravel roads have not been touched because the blacktop roads are still being addressed by the Brown County Highway Department. I recently talked with the highway department and was notified that they will begin to address gravel roads tomorrow morning and will work on them throughout the day.”

On Tuesday, bus drivers will analyze their routes for safety, Hammack said. “If a driver determines that they can’t get to your house on Wednesday, they will call you and arrange a safe area for pickup, or you are welcome to bring your child to school,” she said.

Tuesday will not be an eLearning day; it will be a snow day because of the district’s policy for consecutive closures. Tuesday’s missed school day will be made up on Friday, May 21; today’s missed school day will be made up on Presidents Day, Feb. 15.

The Brown County High School girls basketball team will still be able to play in sectionals Tuesday night at Edgewood.

Brown County schools have been back on “green” status for in-person classes since Jan. 19, but students have not been in school in person since Jan. 27 because of an eLearning day due to weather on Jan. 28, a teacher in-service/planned eLearning day on Jan. 29, and a snow day due to road conditions today.

The Brown County Highway Department has been dealing with a lack of certified drivers for plow trucks for several months. Brown County Highway Superintendent Mike Magner told the county commissioners at their Jan. 6 meeting that his department was in “desperate need” again.

“Experienced CDL dump truck drivers, there’s jobs available if you want to work. Call me or email me,” he said.
