Child solicitation, criminal recklessness charges filed

Shaun Stinson

A 40-year-old Muncie man has been charged with two felonies in Brown County after police say he solicited sex from a teenager and threw a knife toward her head when she told him no.

Shaun Stinson was charged March 8 with child solicitation, a Level 5 felony, and criminal recklessness, a Level 6 felony. A warrant was issued for his arrest on March 9.

He was booked into the Brown County jail on April 20 and had an initial hearing the same day, when his bond was set at $30,000. He bonded out of jail on April 21 after posting 10 percent.

Det. Brian Shrader with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department began an investigation on Jan. 4 after a deputy told him about a 15-year-old girl who had said Stinson molested her three years ago in Muncie, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Shrader set up an interview with the victim at Susie’s Place on Jan. 7. The victim disclosed details related to the molestation that happened when she was 12. After Stinson molested her, he would continue to ask her to have sex with him and the victim would tell him no.

A detective from the Muncie Police Department also was assigned the case. Stinson was booked into the Delaware County jail on a Level 1 felony molestation charge on Jan. 8.

The victim reported in her Jan. 7 interview that in July 2020, she was washing dishes when Stinson asked her to have sex with him. She told him no and walked away, according to the affidavit. The two then began to argue and Stinson threw a knife at her. The victim said the knife mark was still in the wall and that Stinson had broken the knife by throwing it, but had fixed it later. She also said he threw it toward her head.

On Feb. 8, Shrader found Stinson at a Brown County home where the victim had said the knife-throwing incident occurred. Shrader reported seeing the knife mark on the wall.

Stinson denied asking the victim to have sex with him and throwing the knife at her. He told Shrader he had asked the victim to do dishes and she did not do them. He said he became mad when he was doing dishes and his dog had an accident on the floor, causing him to throw the spatula.

His jury trial in Brown County has been scheduled for July 28 at 8 a.m.
