Local group hosting talk on suicide awareness

Centerstone will host a virtual session on Zoom on Wednesday, May 19 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. called “Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention.”

The talk will be led by Safe Talk Trainer Cindy Moore.

YMCA day camp open to kids as young as 3

The Brown County YMCA is now registering students ages 3 and up for summer day camp. Drop-off is from 7 to 10 a.m.; pick-up is from 3 to 6 p.m. Campers will be occupied with activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The YMCA is partnering with Brown County 4-H to provide this care. Children must be potty-trained. Campers must bring a change of clothes, athletic shoes and clothing, a swimsuit and towel, sunscreen and a water bottle. Breakfast and lunch are provided.

The cost is $95 per child, per week, with each additional child at $85.

The reduced rate is $80 per child, per week, with each additional child at $70.

Drop-in spots are available per day for $25 per child and $20 for each additional child. Parents can register for these drop-in days in advance or they’ll be available on a first-come, first-served basis the day that care is needed. The reduced rate per day is $18 for the first child and $16 for additional children.

Nashville Farmers Market now open Sundays

The Nashville Farmers Market opened on May 2 and will be open every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Brown County Inn parking lot, 51 State Road 46 East.

Shoppers can find seasonal produce grown by local farmers, eggs and baked goods. Various meats are also offered. Local growers will sell shrubs, perennials and annuals for shoppers’ gardens.

Local crafters and artists share their talents in a variety of forms: Handwoven goods, soy and beeswax candles and more. Locally made goat’s milk soaps and bath and body products are also available.

The market doubles SNAP and WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program benefits up to $10 per shopper per week. Stop by the information booth for details.

Volunteers needed to put flags on graves

The Brown County Veterans Service Office is soliciting volunteers to help place flags on veterans’ graves throughout Brown County prior to Memorial Day. To volunteer, contact VSO Liaison Sam Banter at [email protected].

Bluebird nest box building workshop planned

The Brown County Bluebird Club will hold a bluebird nest box building workshop at the Brown County Public Library, 205 Locust Lane, on Saturday, May 22 at 1 p.m.

Each participant will assemble a nest box kit, followed by a time of questions and answers.

Free legal aid phone clinic set for next week

Legal Aid will conduct a free legal service phone clinic on Tuesday, May 25 for low-income residents of eight Indiana counties, including Brown County.

The clinic will take place from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Callers can expect a 10-minute phone consultation where legal professionals will answer general questions and offer legal information.

Individuals seeking consultation must register by calling Legal Aid at 812-378-0358 on May 11 between noon and 1:30 p.m. A volunteer attorney will return a call to registered individuals between 3 and 5:30 p.m.

Annual morel mushroom sale happening in May

The 24th annual Howard Hughes Memorial Morel Mushroom Sale for Brown County charities will be Friday and Saturday, May 28 and 29. Friday hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday hours will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until products are sold out.

Free trash disposal day coming in June

Keep Brown County Beautiful and a Brown County Community Foundation grant will enable a free Dumpster Day on Friday, June 4 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Brown County Recycle Center, 176 Old State Road 46.

Dumpsters will be set up behind the recycle center and are able to accept trash for no fee. Tires, TV sets, computers and monitors, hazardous materials and building materials are prohibited, but other items are allowed.

This service is free for all Brown County residents, but donations will be accepted to help defray the Dumpster costs.

Annual quilt show coming up in June

The Pioneer Women’s Club will present a quilt exhibit at the Brown County Historical Society, 90 E. Gould St., on Fridays and Saturdays, June 4, 5, 11 and 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Vendors — including the Yellow Door Quilt Store, Quilting Memories, Granny Sue Quilts, Tree City Stitches and PWC Bargain Store — will have items for sale.

The donation quilt and treasure basket drawing will be Saturday, June 5. Six treasure baskets will be offered. The raffle cost is $1 for one chance or $5 for six. Winners will be contacted by phone or email if not present.

The use of face coverings will be guided by the current county restrictions at the time of the exhibit.

Class of ’73 reunion happening this year

The Brown County High School class of 1973 will reunite this June by the pool at the Brown County Inn.

The reunion will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 12.

Classmates can send $12 to Jed Bessire at P.O. Box 1366, Nashville, IN 47448 or pay $15 at the door to get in. Questions can also be sent to the P.O. box.

There will also be a silent auction to raise money for the class’s 50th reunion. Inexpensive, like-new donations for that auction can also be sent to Bessire.

Class of ’80 reunion weekend set for June

Brown County High School class of 1980 will have a reunion on Saturday and Sunday, June 19 and 20.

A dinner will be at the Seasons Lodge and Conference Center, 560 State Road 46 East on Saturday. A family picnic will be in the Brown County State Park on Sunday.
