What to do with the kids for summer

Water fight! Sprunica Elementary School has the highest enrollment out of the three elementary schools in the Brown County Schools district. On the last day of school, students not only celebrated the start of summer with a Summer Blast Off, but they also celebrated Sprunica being named a Four Star School for the third year in a row.

School was officially out for summer on May 25, but fear not, parents. Several activities and care options are being offered for kids of all ages.

For ages 3 and up

The Brown County YMCA in Nashville is registering students ages 3 and older for summer day camp. Drop-off is from 7 to 10 a.m.; pick-up is from 3 to 6 p.m. Campers will be occupied with activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The YMCA is partnering with Brown County 4-H to provide this care. Children must be potty-trained. Campers must bring a change of clothes, athletic shoes and clothing, a swimsuit and towel, sunscreen and a water bottle. Breakfast and lunch are provided.

The cost is $95 per child, per week, with each additional child at $85.

The reduced rate is $80 per child, per week, with each additional child at $70.

Per-day drop-in spots are available. For those coming in the day of camp, it’s first-come, first-serve, or parents can pre-register their kids for once, twice, etc., per week ahead of time to reserve a spot. Drop-in rates are $25 per day for the first child, with each additional child at $20. If students qualify for free or reduced lunch, it’s $18 and $16 per day.

Additional financial aid is available.

For school-age kids

Brown County Schools, in partnership with Happy Hollow Children’s Camp, announced an offer for a free overnight camping experience for 110 students in Brown County at Happy Hollow Camp.

This four-night, five-day outdoor learning experience begins Monday, July 5 and ends on Friday, July 9.

Happy Hollow Camp is a 900-acre camp in Brown County serving children and youth of all ages. This summer, Happy Hollow has reserved one week just for Helmsburg, Sprunica and Van Buren elementary students and students attending Brown County Middle School in August 2021. Students entering Grades 2 through 8 are eligible.

This week of summer camp is being paid for with federal funding coming to the school district. No income restrictions apply to participants’ families.

Campers must complete an interest form which was emailed to parents through ParentSquare on May 18 and is posted on the Brown County Schools website.

The Brown County Playhouse will host its sixth annual Summer Youth Theatre Camp beginning on Monday, June 14.

The program is open to those ages 7 through 14, with half-day workshops that include singing, dancing and acting classes. After two weeks of learning, the students will present a revue at the playhouse on Saturday, June 26 at noon.

Camp doesn’t require any previous experience with art of any forms to be studied. The cost is $150 and scholarships are available. The application form must be completed by Saturday, May 29.
