State park, YMCA pools reopening for season

Memorial Day Weekend usually signals the start of summer and pool season. This year — unlike last — that’s happening again.

The Brown County YMCA, on Willow Street in Nashville, reopened its indoor pool on May 24 after finishing a big project: Converting it into a salt water system instead of a fresh water pool treated with chlorine. It had been closed since April 11.

The pool is open to YMCA members Mondays to Thursdays, 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Fridays 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The pool is closed Mondays to Fridays between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m.

The YMCA pool also can be used by non-members for $8 per adult and $5 per child.

The Brown County State Park outdoor pool will open on Monday, May 31, but the wading pool will not open because of “supply chain issues,” the Indiana Department of Natural Resources reported in a press release.

BCSP pool hours are noon to 7 p.m. daily. Pool admission is $3 per person. A state park gate fee of $7 per car also is charged unless you have an annual park pass.

The pool inside the Abe Martin Lodge at BCSP remains open for registered guests.

Other state park pools opening this weekend include Clifty Falls, McCormick’s Creek, O’Bannon Woods, Shakamak, and Versailles state parks, and Cagles Mill Lake (Lieber State Recreation Area). The public pool at Turkey Run State Park was closed for the holiday weekend due to lack of lifeguards; it is expected to open the first weekend in June. The public pool at Spring Mill State Park will remain closed until lifeguard and pool staff positions are filled. The public pools at Mounds and Harmonie state parks remain closed, as announced earlier this year.

Applications are still being accepted at state park properties for lifeguards age 15 and older.
