Brown County 12th (of 43 teams)

Top three finishers in each event automatically advance to state

Coach’s comments: The boys track team had a strong showing at the Bloomington North Regional on Thursday evening. The boys finished 12th out of 43 teams represented in the meet. The highlight of the night was Ricky Stanley finishing second in pole vault to qualify him for next Friday’s state championship meet at Ben Davis. Stanley tied his personal best mark of 13-0 in the competition Thursday. Reid Davis closed out his Eagle track and field career with a strong fifth-place finish in the discus. Davis’ best mark of 142-8 was a 5-foot personal record on year. On the track, the Eagles also had some strong performances. The 4×8 team of Waylon Patrick, Rafe Silbaugh, Rhett Silbaugh and Chase Austin were seeded 13th going in but placed seventh overall. The 4×4 team of Stanley, Cameron Fox, Patrick and Austin ran a season-best time of 3:37.10 to also place seventh overall after being seeded 13th. Austin also scored in the 800, placing eighth in a time of 2:04.76, and Rhett Silbaugh had a season-best 1600 race as he placed 11th overall in 4:54.11.

May 22

New Castle 321, Shelbyville 345, Franklin County 380, Lawrence North 395, Wapahani 402, Brown County 419, Muncie Burris 0, Seton Catholic 0

Brown Co.: Cooper VanNess 89, Clay Austin 103 (PR), Bradley Arndt 112, Jordan Burnett 115.

Coach’s comments: It was a long trip to New Castle, and a long day overall, but certainly worth it. The 419 we posted may have been last of the six full teams competing, but it is 21 strokes better than our score last week in the WIC and a whopping 62-stroke improvement from our first 18-hole invitational played back in early April. Cooper VanNess carded an 89, the eighth-lowest score in the 34-man field. Clay Austin helped out with a 103, establishing a personal best for both a 9-hole score and an 18-hole score. Bradley Arndt returned to action and posted his best scores of the season with a 112, and Jordan Burnett’s 115 accounted for the last Eagle score. I am so very proud of our players’ grit and determination. It is gratifying to watch them, knowing how far they have come in a relatively short time. Congratulations to the host team, New Castle, for winning the invitational with a solid 321 and to the medalist Derek Tabor, from New Castle, who fired a one-under 69. We have one match next week, a dual with Whiteland on Tuesday, May 25 at The Legends.

May 25

Whiteland 189, Brown County 221

Brown Co.: Cooper VanNess 46, Clay Austin 50, Jordan Burnett 60, Bradley Arndt 65.

Coach’s comments: Because of a schedule conflict, we were able to host Whiteland at Salt Creek Golf Retreat instead of traveling to face the Warriors at The Legends. While the Warriors were a few strokes better that we were, the 221 we posted was our best score of the season on our home course. We play two 18-hole home matches next week as we prepare for the IHSAA sectional on Monday, June 7. We host Morristown on Tuesday, June 1, and then Edgewood on Thursday, June 3. Both matches are slated to start at 1 p.m. Cooper is on the cusp of having a really low round, and Clay simply continues to find ways to trim strokes. I look for all four to play well next week and anticipate another drop in our team score.
